The first volume of Gary Habermas’s magnum opus, On the Resurrection: Evidences represents the culmination of fifty years of research on the probability of Jesus’s resurrection. Using his “minimal facts argument,” Habermas demonstrates why we ought to trust the biblical and historical testimony of Scripture regarding the resurrection. This book is a must-read for pastors, students, and scholars interested in the historical evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Excellent, thorough, encouraging!

Excellent, thorough, encouraging!
A must read! This resource is a masterpiece! Don’t believe the naysayers. Anyone writing this off is doing so because of their own anti-supernatural bias. The most famous skeptic alive even admits the rebuttals of the evidence fall short, then denies the resurrection based on his own presuppositions. Those who write off this book pointing to “scholarly” rebuttals haven’t done their homework. Habermas has. And a lot of that is pulled together in one place for us here so that we can know how to respond to ignorant criticisms of the resurrection. Thank you Dr. Habermas for this wonderful resource!

This text provides the most comprehensive arguments for the resurrection available anywhere. Habermas has been sharing his 'Minimal Facts' arguments for a long time, but this book significantly expands on the details and leaves absolutely no room for doubt. It is not only well-researched, but also well-organized and well-presented. Citations are abundant and extremely detailed, leading the inquisitive reader to a vast quantity of source documents, interviews, and other references supporting Habermas' claims, surprisingly (and noteworthily) including numerous atheists and agnostics who agree with the minimal facts evidencing the resurrection. The resurrection is the most important event in all of history and Christians must be able to articulate and defend the facts; this book should be in the library of every believer and utilized as a textbook at every Bible college and seminary.

This amazing work is great for the scholar AND for the general reader. That's a miracle of God to be sure, for a book that is over 1000 pages. I read through it, going light on the recitation of the opinions and conclusions of various Christian scholars, but going heavier on the conclusions reached after treatment of the skeptics/atheists. As alluded to, Dr. Habermas covers the full range of scholars, from committed Christians to committed atheists, and distills hundreds of years and hundreds of thousands of pages of scholarship to some basic principles that atheists and Christians can generally agree on. I won't reveal them because you need to buy the book. And Dr. Habermas says that there are two more books in this series coming! Can't wait!

Buttressed by 50 years of research in the field this stellar work will prove to be a perennial legacy & treasure to the field of research known as "historical evidences"-Habermas leaves no stone unturned in this 1st of an unparalleled 4-volume work.

Warning: I had to rent a truck to bring this book home. I'm a third of the way through and it's fascinating. Honestly, I never knew a true scholar could base his or her reputation on what many consider a myth but Mr. Habermas has done so, and has convinced me that the resurrection did happen. Obviously, to have a resurrection there must be a person behind it.

This is Habermas' 1000 page Volume 1 in what will be a four volume set on the resurrection, from the leading scholar of the death and resurrection of Jesus. This volume is packed with information and a quarter of the way into it I am amazed at the even handed approach he takes with both the conservative and liberal positions. There is much information here summarized and critiqued, the style is easy to read, and the footnotes valuable. This is a summary of decades of work in one up to date book, it will be hard to wait for the second volume. For anyone interested in the historical aspects of the pivotal event of Chrisitianity, the resurrection, it is a must read in my opinion.

Addendum: now more than halfway through the book, my opinion stands. Habermas employs the minimal facts method, wherein points of historical evidence agreed upon by skeptics and believers alike are presented, the operative word historical. As I stated before, the book balances data from both camps and is rooted in sound historical methodology. He even gives time to the fringe mythicist skeptics who comprise a miniscule percentage of scholars engaged in such research. Volume 2 is apparently written to address naturalistic explanations and refutations and given Habermas' fairness is presenting views should be also very worthwhile.

In the first volume of his magnum opus, Dr. Gary Habermas compiles decades of research for the resurrection of Jesus. In his book, he uses his minimal facts argument (MFA) to show that the core details of Jesus’s death, burial, and resurrection can be accepted as historical fact. This is a must read for the scholar and layperson alike.

This first volume in the series focuses on religious sources more than the next volume which is focused on addressing secular critics. Certainly one may not be able to come across such a deep record of information from just one source but Gary's first entry into the series highlights a wealth of information for any fan of history or theology. The minimal facts approach is a sort of "reductio ad simplicitas" technique to reach a mass-market audience that may not already have exposure to the topic. Critical views of this style should hopefully come to understand the obvious reasoning behind targeting the general reading population with this approach in the first volume. Even if you already have some background knowledge on the resurrection, the series adds more information to modernize the discussion for the 21st century.

Gary Habermas is a living legend and this is part one of his magnum opus. It is essential for Christians to equip themselves with the knowledge that can help them give a reason for the faith they have, Habermas’s work will equip readers to defend the most important fact of the Christian faith, the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His minimal facts approach is incredible and will have a legacy for centuries to come. I can’t recommend this book highly enough for any Christian who wants to seriously defend their faith, and have a deeper understanding of their own faith, and show that Christians have both faith and reason!
