About the author
Lee M. Spetner is an American physicist (now in Israel) and author, known best for his critique of the modern evolutionary synthesis. In spite of his opposition to neo-Darwinism, Spetner proposes a form of non-random evolution outlined in his 1996 book "Not By Chance! Shattering the Modern Theory of Evolution." and developed further in his 2014 book "The Evolution Revolution." Spetner received his BS degree in mechanical engineering at Washington University in 1945[2] and his Ph.D. in physics from MIT in 1950.
Spetner was at the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) at Johns Hopkins University from 1951 to 1970, where he was a wprinciple-staff member, working on guided-missile systems. In 1970 he became technical director of Eljim, Ltd., later a subsidiary of Elbit, Ltd. in Nes Tsiona, Israel where he was a manager, a period that lasted a further 20 years.[2][4] His work here was on military electronic systems including electronic countermeasures, and a military electronic navigation system.
He taught courses at the Johns Hopkins University, Howard University and the Weizman Institute including classical mechanics, electromagne tic theory, real-variable theory, probability theory, and statistical communication theory.
Spetner first became interested in evolution in 1963 while on a fellowship in the biophysics department of the Johns Hopkins University. His interest in evolutionary theory continued after he returned to APL. Spetner developed what he called his "nonrandom evolutionary hypothesis" (NREH), which accepted microevolution (which he attributed to nonrandom mutations directed by the environment), but rejected macroevolution.
Spetner is a critic of the role of random mutations in the modern evolutionary synthesis. He claims that there is no known random mutation that adds information to the genome.
Spetner continued to study after retirement, pursuing interests in evolution[4] and cancer cures. Dr. Lee Spetner's latest book "The Evolution Revolution: Why Thinking People are Rethinking Evolution" develops his nonrandom hypothesis (NREH) and claims to have demolished neo-Darwinian evolution. The book was published in 2014 by Judaica Press. [9]

On the statistical side of the argument, Dr. Spetner shows that even if information-gaining mutations did happen, Neo-Darwinian Evolution would still be a statistical impossibility. Using mutation rate, number of births per evolutionary step, number of steps in a species transition, and selective value of the mutations, he calculates the chance of a new species forming to be 2.7 x 10^(-2739), which is more than 2,000 orders of magnitude smaller than the chance of flipping 150 coins and having every one come up heads (which has the odds of one in 1^45). Because our minds cannot comprehend such small odds, Dr. Spetner does a good job of giving some relation to compare these odds to. For instance, the chance of all four players in a hand of bridge each being dealt 13 cards of one suit is one in about 160 billion (1.6 x 10^11), which is still trillions of times more likely to happen than a new species forming, according to his calculations. And that is the odds of just one species forming! Think about all the thousands of species there are. This is supposed to have happened thousands and thousands of times! You would have to multiply the 2.7 x 10^(-2739) by itself once for each species on earth (present and past). The odds are so mind-blowing it amazes me that people ignore this fact.
Dr. Spetner also spends a chapter of the book refuting Richard Dawkins' book The Blind Watchmaker. Spetner does a good job, and the book is easy for him to refute.
Spetner also gives a solid overview of cellular biology and the inner workings of the cell, how DNA is replicated, how cells make proteins, and basically how cells function in general. The appendix gives a lot of information on this, and it is not necessary for the reader to already have a background in biology because Dr. Spetner explains things pretty well. Simply reading the appendix made me marvel at the complexity of life and wonder how anyone could believe that life came from non-living chemicals randomly and naturally. Even the simplest cells are so complex it blows my mind.
Dr. Spetner references many biologists and scientists throughout the book. He also spends the last chapters of Not By Chance building up to and putting forth his own theory of evolution, which he calls the nonrandom evolutionary hypothesis (NREH). His theory is very intriguing and he offers interesting support for it, and I believe that it should be considered. Also, Dr. Spetner makes a point to say that the NREH itself does not speak on the origin of life and is agnostic, unlike the NDT, which is atheistic in nature.
I believe that anyone interested in the evolution/creation/intelligent design debate would benefit from reading Not By Chance.
1) Most of the icons of evolution have been debunked
2) Mutations and natural selection can't generate complex specified information
3) The metaphysical naturalism behind neo-darwinism has been exposed
4) The links are still missing, both in the fossil record and in molecular biology
5) Evidence for design and fine tuning is overwelming, as even some evolutionists seem recognize (v.g. "designoids"; "appearence of design", "machines", "systems", "codes")
6) Probability and information theory say that information presuposes an intelligent sender and a meaningful code.
7) The big bang and the cosmological principle are under sustained attack
8) Many evolutionary arguments cancel each other, leading neo-darwinism to a dead end.
9) Biblical creationism can generate good and testable scientific models and predictions
10) Mayr, Lewontin, Gould and Dawkins are bright people but they cannot get their theories right, because assumptions are wrong and facts don't fit. (you may be an excellent runner but that won't help you win the race if you are running in the wrong direction!)
Lee Spetner just demonstrates beyond reasonable doubt that mutations never generate brand new DNA information. On the other hand, natural selection by definition removes information.
Altough the mecanism of mutations and natural selection can explain speciation, it has nothing to do with particles-to-people evolution. Speciation (Top-botton) is not evolution in the neo-darwinistic (botton-top) sense.
Speciation requires the pre-existence of information. Evolution is meant to generate information out of nothing. Biblical creationism has no problem with natural selection and speciation. On the contrary, it predicts it and explains it.
By studying the problem of mutations and information generation, Lee Spetner goes a long way in removing evolutionary misinformation.

In light of the replication crisis happening in many fields of science today, I think its becoming increasingly clear that not just biology but all of science is in need of some spring cleaning and renovation.
