Spam Musubi is amazing, but there's no reason it should be $7

[–]bsievers 261 points262 points  (14 children)

Especially if they didn't even spend the money on a musubi press.

[–]ItsNotGoingToBeOK 107 points108 points  (2 children)

Take both ends off the SPAM can and you've got your press!

[–]bsievers 46 points47 points  (1 child)

That’s actually what I do. Spam can lined with plastic wrap.

[–]plzhlpwthtrk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is genius.

[–]worbashnik 72 points73 points  (4 children)

Only noobs need a press. If you don’t have sushi hands then don’t make sushi! r/gatekeeping r/iamverybadass r/bigdickriders

[–]chibookie 22 points23 points  (3 children)

Damn, why isnt that last one real

[–]Portablewalrus 30 points31 points  (2 children)

Be the change you want to see.

[–]rob_van_dang 21 points22 points  (5 children)

Musubi press? I gave it a Google and I'm shocked. What's wrong with using your hands?

[–]bsievers 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Oh man it gets that rice so well shaped and so snugly packed, it’s awesome.

[–]Neuroprancers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You say useless implement, I say unexplored market niche.

[–]neurorgasm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You probably don't even own a banana holder. Peasantry I say!

[–]GeorgeRRZimmerman 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You spend $5 on the press because it makes it crazy easy to quickly and consistently make a bunch of it at once.

[–]rob_van_dang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I'm going to try it with the spam can trick they're talking about in the thread above. I don't like kitchen tools with single uses.

[–]User_of_Name 48 points49 points  (26 children)

Spam musubi is one of my favorite foods to eat whenever I visit Hawaii. I agree, $7 is way too much!

[–]bromerk 27 points28 points  (21 children)

Even in Portland, it's 2 for $5!

[–]chjmor 27 points28 points  (7 children)

2 for 5 at our local ramen shop. The owner always has Musubi in his pockets, so if you catch him at a bar, you almost always get a snack.

[–]Rebel_bass 36 points37 points  (5 children)

Who the fuck . . . I mean, that’s awesome and I wouldn’t turn it down, I guess.

[–]chjmor 37 points38 points  (1 child)

Last time I was a few beers in on the patio, jokingly said "What's up with that musubi though?". Literally threw me one from 15 feet away. Wasn't even mad.

[–]plzhlpwthtrk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Napoleon, give me some of your musubi.

[–]Hadto_makea_newname 8 points9 points  (12 children)

Where do you get your musubi at? I live in portland but can never find good ones

[–]bromerk 9 points10 points  (1 child)

808 grinds. I'm not from Hawaii, so I'm definitely not an authority of good musubi but I dig it and their chicken shoyu plate is pretty good too.

[–]Portablewalrus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good Kimchee and a good mai tai too. Mostly because it's loaded with so much alcohol there's a limit.

[–]WhiteRhino909 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Spam musubi is $1.50 here in Hawaii. This $7 shit is ridiculous.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

what's in it other than spam and rice? I feel like cold spam is....not good to eat...makes me kind of gag thinking about it but i'm open to try this. Never saw it before.

[–]User_of_Name 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You would typically eat it hot/warm. Cold spam does not sound particularly nice, haha.

Spam musubi, as depicted, consists of a layer of spam over rice, wrapped in seaweed (nori). There is a mix of sauces sandwiched between the spam and rice. The sauce typically consists of soy sauce, oyster sauce and sugar.

[–]KaimanaTM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You need to pan fry it. It becomes a whole different food when fried.

[–]novembr 25 points26 points  (8 children)

Everybody shits all over Spam every other day of the week but dress it up and give it a fancy name and all of sudden everyone loves it. lol

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Everyone hates Spam but if you add some liver to it you can call it pâté and sell it for $20 a lb.

[–]Bloodybuses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to get Spam fritters, with baked beans and mashed potatoes as school dinners, deep fried of course, this was in Glasgow, Scotland, in the 80's..absolutely bad for you, but really blooming tasty!

[–]yukichigai 4 points5 points  (2 children)

$7 for 3 or if they're way bigger. For that little with such a small amount of seaweed wrap? Ugh, no.

I bet the savages even used barbecue sauce instead of Katsu sauce. Not even good stuff, I'm talking Kraft.

[–]RayvinAzn 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Fuck katsu sauce, miso paste is where it’s at.

[–]yukichigai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but that's advanced musubing and there was no hope that they'd have pulled that off.

[–]Shilas 6 points7 points  (1 child)

literally anything + fancy foreign word = profit

[–]grub117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can actually eat that?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, it's TWO pieces for $7! And, delivered!

[–]g-dragon 837 points838 points  (44 children)

these are normally like, 2$.

[–]IAmTheGodDamnDoctor 661 points662 points  (39 children)

The school I taught at last year had a black market masubi ring that got busted. Kids were making masubi and then selling it in class for $2-$3 each. It was fucking hilarious. But they seriously operated like a drug ring. The were selling in secret, trying to do deals when the teachers stepped out, bring extra backpacks with random stuff stacked on top of the masubi to hide the goods. Great problem to have. I love masubi

[–]FlirtySanchez 415 points416 points  (18 children)

You managed to spell musubi wrong the same amount of times it's spelled correctly in the top comment chain.

[–]IAmTheGodDamnDoctor 162 points163 points  (16 children)

And that's why I'm not the Japanese teacher.

[–]anawkwardemt 101 points102 points  (11 children)

They're Hawaiian though

[–]IAmTheGodDamnDoctor 115 points116 points  (1 child)

I'm also not a Hawaiian teacher. So I've got that going for me...

[–]anawkwardemt 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Adapt. Improvise. Overcome.

[–]nitorigen 46 points47 points  (3 children)

But isn't musubi a Japanese word?

[–]Cathlulu 44 points45 points  (1 child)

lots of japanese influence in hawaii during WWII

[–]2015071 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can confirm from those sunk battleships

[–]MILK_DUD_NIPPLESno longer on keto 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes, it means "knot" in Japanese

[–]celesticles1978 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Can confirm I am from Hawaii. Spam is life.

[–]Skyaboo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s why you’re the god damn doctor

[–]wempaii_ 25 points26 points  (8 children)

kids are just tryna make bank and people out here tryna stop the hustle 😤😤

[–]IAmTheGodDamnDoctor 48 points49 points  (7 children)

kids are out here selling warm, cooked meat that's been sitting in there backpack for at least a day, and teachers are out here tryna stop food poisoning. Also, kids are out here stealing money from each other and their parents, and teachers are out here tryna stop them from making bad decisions.

Seriously though, mad respect to kids ingenuity and entrepreneurship, but all sorts of bad stuff was going down in this black market. The school did encourage the kids to sell the stuff at back-to-school night, our school carnival, fundraisers, sporting events, and other special events. However, they made sure the students had help and supervision.

We had a couple outbreaks of food poisoning at various school events over the past few years. The school was trying to shut that down.

[–]ImJustAUser 10 points11 points  (6 children)

It's spam not random cooked meat though which may make it a bit better.

[–]IAmTheGodDamnDoctor 16 points17 points  (5 children)

Not really. That cooked meat will be in the danger zone. Once something is cooked, it needs to be held at temp or refrigerated/frozen. Chilling in a lukewarm backpack is going to lead to bacteria and spoilage.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Isn't spam packed with preservatives & salt? It will outlive us!

[–]Gen_Jack_Oneill 13 points14 points  (3 children)

It wouldn't be the Spam getting people sick most likely, but the room temperature rice.

And if some random student got sick from anything the illicit snacks could be blamed, and the school would be blamed for not stopping the musubi ring.

[–]AmericanMuskrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't they sell it next to gas station registers in Hawaii? That doesn't sound very refrigerated.

[–]Khpuffy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, nothing in Musubi should get you sick if you leave it in the danger zone a few hours assuming the prep was done hygienically. IE: Hands were washed etc etc. The food prepper guidelines are there for food prep people precisely to limit the germ content of food that you will eat in 1-4 hours.

[–]g-dragon 14 points15 points  (2 children)

I'm pretty sure kids did this in my school, but with those delicious lil vietnamese egg rolls

[–]winnebagomafia 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There was a secret tamale ring in my school. Kid would sell his mom's fucking amazing tamales. The teachers would turn a blind eye because they were buying them too.

[–]ovoid709 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Vietnamese egg/spring rolls fucking godstomp every other egg/spring roll on the planet. So perfect and bubbly.

Edit: Just remembered Filipino lumpia. Those things might be a tie.

[–]monkeyburrito411 6 points7 points  (7 children)

My high school had this too! Are you in California by any chance?

[–]IAmTheGodDamnDoctor 13 points14 points  (6 children)

Yes, and my county has two of the countries three most diverse school districts. So we have crazy good food and cultural representation.

[–]monkeyburrito411 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Was the school named after a lawyer?

[–]DollarSignDouche 10 points11 points  (0 children)

$2. The dollar sign goes before the number.

[–]Naw397 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not in Hawaii

[–]Pizza_antifa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That spam alone is worth $2 not including the labor and packaging.

[–]NorCalK 234 points235 points  (0 children)

That’s spam Musubi a Hawaiian snack

[–][deleted] 141 points142 points  (8 children)

Musubi. $7? What a ducking rio off

[–]fancyHODOR 33 points34 points  (2 children)

I'm pretty sure it's $7 for both musubis in the plastic container. Still, 3.50 per is still a fucking rip-off

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

$4 is the right price.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, it's delivered!

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (2 children)

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Mobile is the only way to use.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Am mobile user, can confirm

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Ducking rio off? RIP English

[–]JerryMau5 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No no my friend, you haven't lived till you RIO'd some ducks off.

[–][deleted] 95 points96 points  (7 children)

Of all the things to cheap out on, the seaweed?

[–]sashimi_rollin 59 points60 points  (0 children)

The person that made this has absolutely no fucking clue what they're doing. That having been said, the nori is the least of their problems in execution.

[–]carriegood 25 points26 points  (5 children)

Spam musubi is made that way with just a little "belt" of seaweed.

[–]fancyHODOR 23 points24 points  (2 children)

It is better with a full sleeve of nori though, both taste and structure-wise.

[–]BrownLakai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It reminds me of a g-string

[–]plzhlpwthtrk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Huh I've never seen it that way but why not it sounds great!

[–]one_crack_nacnac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usually the “belt” is not that little

[–]iSkoro 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Spam musubi is so delicious not shitty

[–]rob_van_dang 45 points46 points  (3 children)

Did they actually label this spam sushi? 😒

[–]Ak47110[🍰] 17 points18 points  (2 children)

It's a staple in Hawaii!

[–]rob_van_dang 49 points50 points  (1 child)

It's called spam musubi

[–]Haikuna__Matata 40 points41 points  (1 child)

Get yourself some loco moco.

[–]stuckit 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Its not spam sushi, its spam musubi.

[–]Daydreeeam 21 points22 points  (2 children)

musubi goes hard but that's like .75 worth of food

[–]SecretAgentKatManx[S] 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Yes, but universities like to add a sense of pride and accomplishment with every meal. Everyone knows that’s extra.

[–]jsonn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

More like sense of Sodexo

[–]DrDoodlebug 15 points16 points  (3 children)

Spam musubi from 7/11 all da way brudda!! So ono!

[–]macmn92 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Dude downtown Honolulu at kukui plaza. Little shop inside made fresh to order. They add egg in it best I ever had

[–]plzhlpwthtrk 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Like tamago style egg or what? Your comment aroused my interest without bedding it back down!

[–]Boi_when 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Grew up with those, they are amazing

[–]gbmaulin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh I'd eat the hell out of that

[–]Smugcat101 10 points11 points  (0 children)

well we've got eggs beans sausage and spam,

[–]YourAverageGod 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The overhead on this is like 60c including labor. (Labor being that this was very poorly constructed and not even in a proper packaging.

Edit: Didn't see the container it was in. Still looks like shit.

[–]DreamSteel 5 points6 points  (2 children)

How big is your sticker collection now? Did you ever try the shiny ones?

[–]SecretAgentKatManx[S] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Wow, someone who remembers my tattoo collection. No, it wouldn’t be much of a collection if I kept putting the tats on. Since I’m at college, they are currently housed in a box in my old room. Along with my eraser and pencil collections. Thanks for asking though.

[–]DreamSteel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Creeped the profile and saw it, thought it was neat.

[–]Turious 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I'd never considered this... but now I want it.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

You definitely should! It's really hard to find on the mainland, though.

[–]MrDTD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy to make at least.

[–]soapbutt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm glad I live somewhere where spam musubi is normal.

[–]issabreakfastburrito 3 points4 points  (1 child)

This is a big thing in hawaii

[–]VladimirReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So that's why it's so expensive!

[–]DreadSpud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That looks really good, but $7 is a little much

[–]smoothjuicer 3 points4 points  (10 children)

I’ve never had spam. Am I missing out on something?

[–]SecretAgentKatManx[S] 15 points16 points  (5 children)

It’s not for everyone. It’s a very salty meat-like substance. Some people abhor it. Some people love it. Me personally, I love eating slices of fried spam with a bowl of sticky white rice because I’m a basic bitch. It’s my comfort food.

[–]madonnaboomboom 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Throw a fried egg on top of the rice. That's some good shit.

[–]linlorienelen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a loco moco but with spam a couple months ago and that shit was bomb.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't forget the soy sauce!

[–]skootchingdog 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Spent time in Hawaii or with Hawaiians?

[–]SecretAgentKatManx[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, I just grew up poor, and spam was a popular donation in the food banks

[–]DaOsoMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Spam is processed tinned ham. It's usually eaten as a breakfast side, like bacon or sausage. It's very popular on the Hawaiian islands because it was sent over to soldiers stationed there during WW2. It kind of became a staple food item there.

[–]6out_of10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get ume kine or nah?

[–]bsktbll_24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s exactly $.12 worth of ingredients in this picture

[–]cup_of 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s call musubi and it’s fucking delicious.

[–]SubAverageJoe00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, this is the worst musubi I've ever seen.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but that’s disgusting.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For $7 and 30 minutes, you could make 15 of these

[–]BaconPersuasion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure that’s spam masubi it’s a Pacific Islander thing.

[–]Mous1010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remove the seaweed and that would be so good! I can't stand the taste of seaweed.

[–]Vinifera7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is spam musubi, and is really yummo. This one looks awful though.

[–]BroadStreetElite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spam Musubi isn’t shitty!

[–]YaBoiiMC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats Hawaiian bro

[–]ScrewYourPickles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s where your tuition went, enjoy!

[–]inavanbytheriver 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It looks like they used the wrong type of rice.

[–]xCurlyxTopx 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Kinda looks like spam on a big rice krispy

[–]SecretAgentKatManx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

O shit boi, you might be on to something new and wonderful...

[–]Drclaw411 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like ass.

[–]lostcorndog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude. I miss good rice. Moving to the middle of nowhere after living in Hawaii for 6 years makes you appreciate good rice. Like you ever try to make a musubi with Jasmine Rice? It's not a good time.

[–]4ha1 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Welp... Is it any good?

[–]SecretAgentKatManx[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had to peel the seaweed off because it smelled like the devils anus. The rice was covered in a brown sauce that tasted like a dirty fish. I ate both pieces so overall, not the worst thing I’ve ever eaten. Might buy it again someday.

[–]YoSuperEgo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy fucking shit that's almost more vile looking than the dining hall sushi at GSU

[–]Slummish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My in-laws are rich. They love SPAM... The smell makes me dry heave.

[–]OrphanDevour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Musubi is fucking delish, but 7 dollars is tooooo damn much. Hawaiian bbq place sells for 2.50

[–]hRutherford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone on here is only bashing this bc it's $7, not bc it's a spam "sushi". We all know how delicious a spam masubi is!

[–]DJCHERNOBYL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$7 for $1.50 in ingredients...now thats a markup

[–]BigBenisBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'd sacrifice a newborn for spam musubi

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So ono! I like grind!

[–]Pizza4Dinner 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Holy fuck those look gnarly.

[–]SecretAgentKatManx[S] 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Actually not that bad. Eating them right now.

[–]stardust01230 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You actually bought that?

[–]c0mesandg0es 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know man! If I didn't buy burger king just now then I would have busted out a can and some eggs

[–]Fiss 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That’s not sushi

[–]Tim-E-Cop1211819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer the guava glazed chicken.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is to sushi what an orc is to an elf.

[–]KinkyQuesadilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they wrap it in old man's skin?

[–]phazeflux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s unholy, but I’d still eat it it’s probably delicious

[–]manfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that bad, some people are into that shit

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay that honestly looks really good

[–]BoobaVera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This meal is more valuable than education. The calories will take you further in life than any University degree attainable.

[–]TwoGunGonzalez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d still hit that

[–]chain-rule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spam is overhated as hell, but that pricetag is just the right amount of hated.

[–]DollarSignDouche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$7. The dollar sign goes before the number.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Sometimes on this sub you see stuff where you’re like “oh I’d eat that.” This is definitely not one of them.

[–]one_crack_nacnac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shoots den, more for the rest of us here in Hawaii 🤙🏽

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

/r/SushiAbomination/ needs to hear about this

[–]buddascrayon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trust me, they already know.

[–]Purchaseyourmaterial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell even in Hawaii spam musabi is cheaper than this...

[–]Itzyaboilmaooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worse than normal sushi!

[–]blaine_edwards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you should start selling them on the side for 1$ a pop

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think about it, you’re paying for the processed leftovers of chicken, beef, and pork. It’s not even the good stuff.

[–]spoonfedsam 0 points1 point  (1 child)

“Spam sushi”

[–]biggggant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Spam Musubi"

[–]CoffeeAddict92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, I'd eat it

[–]JohnnyChanterelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vomited in my mouth a little

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be really good with hashbrowns instead of rice. Get a nice crisp on the spam and the potatos.

[–]DoritoCookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is NOT worth 7 bucks and spam for sushi is sacrilegious

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not sushi you dumbass. Its a Hawaiian food.

[–]PepperJonie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hawaii?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

musubi - and no......... just...... no.

[–]demalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spushi?

[–]StopJoshinMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s sushi...

[–]AntsherpSore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Yo Sal, put some ‘mo nori on that muhfuka!”

[–]Xtram3dium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the actual fuck are they trying to serve yall?

[–]bigloud1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MC Donald’s serve spam w breakfast in Hawaii. Supposedly the GI s in WWII had it in rations and Hawaiians loved it. They are fond of pork

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats spam musubi
