The male supporter had watched Stoke City play Brentford in the cup tournament at the bet365 Stadium in the Staffordshire city. Paramedics were called minutes after full-time to a footpath near the ground to find the man in cardiac arrest.

Despite the best efforts of medics and fellow fans, the supporter died in hospital a short time later, reports Stoke-on-Trent Live.

It has not yet been confirmed which side he'd been at the stadium supporting but Stoke City has expressed its sadness at the tragedy.

"The thoughts of all at the club are with the family and friends of the supporter who sadly died after being taken ill as they made their way home from last night’s game," a spokesman for the Championship club said.

"A number of fans came to the aid of the gentleman and administered CPR before the medical professionals arrived on the scene but it was with great sadness that we learned that the supporter could not be saved."

Two ambulances and a paramedic officer rushed to the scene, which was on a footpath that connects the stadium with the Heron Cross and Fenton areas of the city and runs alongside the A50.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 9.49pm last night to a footpath off Highfield Drive to reports of a cardiac arrest.

"Two ambulances and a paramedic officer arrived on the scene to find bystanders performing CPR on a man in a critical condition.

"Ambulance staff quickly took over resuscitation efforts at the scene before conveying the man on blue lights to the Royal Stoke University Hospital.

"Sadly, despite everyone’s best efforts, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead a short time later in hospital."

Brentford won the match 2-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the competition for the second successive season.

They had a 2-0 lead at half-time after strikes by Ivan Toney and Sergi Canos.

Stoke pulled a goal back through former Brentford midfielder Romaine Sawyers but were unable to take the tie to penalties.
