For english describtion see text below.

Visit the Pantheon in Piazza della Rotonda - the only sanctuary for all deities and one of the largest buildings in Rome.

Inconspicuous on the outside, but magnificent on the inside. The Pantheon is one of the most spiritual ancient buildings in Rome. Derived from the Greek, "Pan" stands for everything and "theos" for god, as the Greeks built this building in earlier times as a temple for all the Greek gods. Its impressive 24-metre-high and 43-metre-wide dome with a central opening gave the temple its special architectural feature. It is currently one of the largest self-supporting domes in the world. The sunlight illuminates the circular hall through the opening and makes the golden decorations and sculptures shine - an impressive sight.

On the forecourt of the Pantheon - Piazza della Rotonda - is the Fontana di Pantheon with the obelisk of the ancient Egyptian ruler Ramses II.

Take part in one of the many guided tours of the Pantheon. The tour guides will provide you with interesting insights into the period and take you through every corner of the temple.

Good to know: From the 6th century onwards, the Pantheon lost its status as a temple to the gods and became a memorial to all martyrs. Subsequently, the temple was used as a burial church, which houses the tombs of both Kings Vittorio a Emanuele II and Emperor Umberto I as well as the painter Raphael, the composer Arcangelo Corelli and the heart of Cardinal Ercole Consalvi.
