The 39-year-old has held a 20 per cent stake in Sunderland AFC since 2018, but is understood to be close to a deal that would see he and Kyril Louis-Dreyfus take a majority share in the club.

The duo are understood to be in pole position to seal a deal to purchase 80 per cent of the Wearsiders, despite fresh interest emerging over the weekend.

And while the wealth of the Louis-Dreyfus family is well-known, with Margarita Louis-Dreyfus featuring on the Forbes Rich List with a wealth of over $6billion, Sartori’s own financial firepower was less clear.

But documents published by the Public Transparency and Ethics Board in Uruguay – and relayed by La Diaria - show his net worth stands at close to $100million, and that figure doesn’t include his salary as a senator or the wealth of his wife Ekaterina Rybolovlev.

That worth is based upon Sartori’s involvement with and shareholding in three main companies: Renio SA, Union Group IHL and Arvesa Corp – through which he holds his share in the Black Cats.

The documents also show that Sartori has close to 16 million Uruguayan pesos in his bank account, and ‘just over a million dollars in banks in Monaco and the United Kingdom’. Sartori is also said to have an apartment in London.

That, according to La Diaria, makes him comfortably the wealthiest member of the Uruguayan senate.
