I first discovered Ochikeron's channel (and blog Create Eat Happy) only recently; ever since living in Japan several years ago, I am always on the lookout for Japanese cooking channels (two of my other favorites are Just One Cookbook and RunnyRunny999). Her bright personality and simple, approachable take on all types of Japanese homestyle dishes (bento, gohanmono, zensai, yakimono, nabemono, etc.) is beautifully photographed, and better yet, the entire book is bilingual. There are a surprising amount of recipes in "Create Eat Happy" given the book's compact size and bilingual recipes, but it is very easy to navigate and divided into main dishes (gyoza, nikujaga, tonkatsu, oden, yakiniku, ebi furai), side dishes (Japanese potato salad, goya chanpuru, nasu no dengaku, kinpira, agedashi tofu, chawanmushi), rice dishes (onigiri, omurice, beef beer curry and rice, doria), and seasonal dishes (datemaki, shiromiso zoni, nanakusagaru, inarizushi, koinobori spring rolls, Halloween mummy shrimp, Halloween Jack'O'Lantern deviled eggs, Christmas tree rolls).
Step-by-step photos will help even novice chefs master these recipes. It's also very helpful for the fried dishes in particular, as I don't have much experience deep frying and have a hard time judging by directions like "a light golden color" without actually seeing what the food should look like.
I love that some dishes combine the traditional with a Western influence (deep-fried salmon, cheese, and avocado bites, pumpkin gratin, paella Japonesa), and the holiday dishes in particular would be a lot of fun to make with kids. It's unusual that I want to make nearly every recipe from a cookbook (and I have more than 400, including at least 30 Japanese cookbooks!), but Ochikeron's debut is clearly a winner. This would make a fantastic gift for college students new to cooking, Japanophiles, and anyone who is looking for tasty, simple dishes to make dinnertime fun.

I've enjoyed watching ochikeron's YT channel for awhile now and wanted to support her by buying her book. You definitely get a good bang for your buck with this purchase - a nice variety and number of yummy looking Japanese-style recipes (including main, side, rice and seasonal dishes) packed into such a cute, colorful little book! I like her creative take on many of the recipes, as well as the helpful tips scattered throughout and color coded sections to make them easier to flip to. The beautiful, full-color photos will also be very useful to check that I'm doing things right!
I think the only thing that could be improved would be to make it spiral-bound in order to lie flat on the counter while cooking, but otherwise, it seems well made to withstand the rigors of the kitchen!

Finally got my copy after waiting on a decent seller price. I paid around $45 for a used copy. For comparison, the cover price is !000yen (about $11 CAD). It's a softcover cookbook of a Youtuber's recipes printed on semi-glossy paper. The recipes range from sweet to savoury, vegetables to meat, and even directions to make white rice. The layout is nice and clean, with a food photo on the left and instructions on the right. There is English and Japanese instructions. They accurately follow her video recipes. It is read left to right. I feel it's more geared towards her English speaking audience who want to cook Japanese foods.
For those unfamiliar with Ochikeron, she creates easy, homestyle Japanese recipes with a fun twist, and cute aesthetics. Most ingredients can be found in large grocery stores these days. You may have to stop by an Asian grocer for odd items, like mirin and food cutters.
Since it's out of print and sellers have decided to extort money by selling it for many times the original cost (as much as $800, which is 72x), you as the consumer, need to decide how much you'd want to spend on it. Unless you are a huge fan of Ochikeron and absolutely have to have the book, then it's best to save your money and watch her videos for free. IMO, I wouldn't pay more than $50 for a cookbook. I have a large collection of cookbooks. Anything $50+ is either encylopedia-sized or a hardcover.
