Easy As Vegan Pie: One-of-a-Kind Sweet and Savory Slices Hardcover – October 1, 2013

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 28 ratings

Author Hannah Kaminsky writes, “It’s time to end the stereotype that merely making crust can bring a newcomer to their knees, placing pies on an unattainable pedestal that scares away those who simply hunger for a slice of comfort. Bring pie back to the table where it belongs, accessible to anyone with the desire to throw down a bit of flour and watch it transform by way of some ancient alchemy into something delicious in the oven.” Featuring more than one hundred simple but scrumptious recipes, Easy as Vegan Pie offers alternatives to America’s favorite dessert, normally heavily laden with butter, eggs, and other animal products.

The recipes in this book take some unexpected twists, offering vegan bakers a whole new pie experience. The gorgeous photography will lure bakers to try chocolate chipotle sweet potato pie, skinny mint tart, caramel macadamia crumb pie, and pomegranate pecan pie. Savory treats are well-represented as well, with Thanksgiving quiche, primavera pot pies, and wasabi pea pie, among others. Kaminsky offers an unprecedented treat for vegan bakers, providing a unique and inspiring mix of culinary adventure and down-home comfort food.

We'd borrowed this book before buying, so we knew it would be awesome. Dear LifeMate loves making pies!

I've had this book for several years, but I only do a lot of baking in the fall, especially when I bake things like pies. Every recipe I've tried from this book has been a success, and loved by omnis as well as fellow vegans. There are recipes for crusts, sauces and other accompaniments, cream pies, frozen pies, nut pies, fruit pies, miscellaneous pies, and savory pies. Favorites have been the speculoos pumpkin pie, which makes a classic holiday dessert extra special, and the Thanksgiving quiche, which combines turkey, potatoes, and a medley of vegetables into a tasty breakfast or brunch dish.

I love this book! The recipes are amazing and the photos are spectacular! Together with Kaminsky's Vegan Desserts and Vegan A La Mode, this trilogy is all you need to serve delicious desserts to everyone you know, regardless of eating preferences or allergies. I have made three recipes so far, and I can't wait to try more. Did I say I love this book?

I love to bake, especially low carb. I was familiar with Hannah's book My Sweet Vegan before I started baking low carb, and it had a few recipes that were successfully for me, so her new book appealed to me, if only for her creativity. She does offer a gluten free crust recipe made with sweet rice flour and tapioca flour, but does not indicate what pies would compliment such a crust. The recipes look amazing because every pie recipe has the complimentary picture included.

However, my biggest concern with this vegan pie book, is the small print. When following a recipe, I use a cookbook holder, that has a permanent spot on my kitchen counter. After placing the book in my cookbook holder, I noticed that the font was so small, I could barely read it! I assume the very glossy paper that the recipes are printed on is to accentuate the finished product, but the glare it produces is distracting at best, and does nothing to facilitate reading the recipe. I know it's important to read the entire recipe to make sure you have all the ingredients, but I can't be expected to remember all of it, while I am putting the recipe together. Many of the recipes, are printed on a colored background, with white or black type, and I think these are the hardest of all to read.

I really wanted to like this book, but to try out most of the recipes in this book, I would need to retype the recipes out myself, just so I could read them! That's more work than I'm willing to do. Yes, the book is pretty, and her ideas are creative, but it is not a practical book. The book is obviously designated for the younger crowd, or those with better eyesight. It's a little small for a coffee table book, but might work.

I am not a pro at making pies. Thankfully, the Buckeye Pie is easy to make and will impress your vegan and non-vegan friends. The Buckeye Pie is like a peanut butter cup in pie form. I used a store-bought Oreo cookie crust and layered in the peanut butter mousse and chocolate ganache. I can't wait to try more pie recipes from her book.

I have this book plus Hannah’s other two books - Vegan Desserts & Vegan a la mode, all 3 are fabulous books. Some of the ice-creams in a la mode are swoon worthy. I was sorry to see that someone had given such a bad review of this book here and felt I had redress the balance. I am Home Economist who specialised in food, cooking, teaching, demonstrating and healthy diet for over 40 years; I have run a small catering business and also a small cook school both from my home. Earlier this year I have completed the Rouxbe online professional Plant-Based Certification course and am also taking Fran Costigan’s Essential Vegan Desserts Course on the same Rouxbe platform. My husband & I are both vegans. So I have much experience with food, cooking and especially vegan cooking.

I think there are some outstanding recipes in this book, some examples which I recommend are the Caramel Macadamia Crumb Tart, Apricotta Tart, Strawberry Streusel Pie – see photos. I think every pie has a photograph as I recall. Ok, yes, the recipes printed on the coloured background are not my cup of tea, rather garish perhaps would describe this, they might also be described as rather dated looking as the other reviewer here has mentioned, but this in no way affects the recipe content & results you will get from them, which are excellent.

There is a good description of what ingredients might be required & all about them, also tools of the trade, essential techniques, troubleshooting; this is followed by crusts & pastries before we get to all the yummy recipes, mainly sweet with some savoury towards the end of the book. There is a lot contained in this small sized book. I also recommend Hannah’s other books. The Figgy Pudding Pie is my go-to Christmas pudding dish. I do hope my review makes you think of this book as a value for money purchase. I came here to get another copy of this book to give to a friend and found one solitary review giving only 1*, this made me very sad- I give it 5* - 280 pages of coloured plates is not to be sneezed at for £9.10, never mind the fab recipes.

the recipes are complicated, but even worst the book is disturbingly ugly. no aesthetics, horrible font types and otherwise nice pictures pasted on ridiculous colorful backgrounds, like a '90s website. very disappointed.
