Multi-Wheel Pastry Cutters

When I got this decorating 'comb' I was pleasantly surprised to find it was NOT made of plastic. [the picture of the white 'comb' in the ad is a bit deceptive] It's actually made out of stainless steel & is very sharp along the edges for precision. one edge is square cut, one is half circle, & the other is zigzag. (if you enlarge the picture below you can see the edges quite clearly) Thanks to its metal design I can cut through hot brittles & not have to worry I'm dulling a knife against marble. I also don't have to worry about it staining with food coloring. The straight edge side doubles as a scraper/cutter for making breads & pastries.And it's made in the USA! What's not to love?

I wish I would've found this Item Sooner "Ateco Decorating Comb & Icing Smoother" this is so simple and it works so Great, so many times I used to Grab my Fork to make some sort of Design when I Make a Cake, however, this Comb is so much better and it gives that Professional look of an Experienced Decorator, like I was doing it for...Years! Its so easy to Create Designs and so much Fun.

It is Made of Aluminum and its not Flimsy at all, you can't even Bend it, ...well, don't try it. I wash it by hand so it will stay looking like New for a long time. Each side of the Comb has a different Design, even the smooth side is perfect just to Level the Frosting all around and Top of the Cake getting it ready for Decorating. I wanted to try it out and I already made a Cake and it Works Wonders, you can Create all kinds of Patterns and Designs, even works with Icing on Top of Sheet Cakes,...you know, I just Retired my Fork!...Thank You D.D.

This is a metal tool. The flat side is for smoothing the frosting of a cake, for example - to smooth buttercream in order to lay fondant over it. The other three sides will create a design in the frosting, instead of making it perfectly smooth. The instructions say to apply a thick layer of icing to the cake, then before the crust forms; dip the smoother/comb in hot water, shake off excess water, and draw it across the iced surface. Very simple and direct. If you hold it at an angle, you will remove less icing from the cake. Picture holding the tool completely perpendicular to the surface of the cake, with the patterned edge against the icing, then (keeping the entire edge against the icing) folding the hand that holds the tool in toward the cake. I'm not sure what the benefit is of making the tool rectangular instead of square, but the two long sides will easily cover a standard two-layer cake side. The small sides may need to be drawn against the icing twice, once at the top of the cake and once at the bottom. I had thought this was plastic acrylic and am pleased to see that it is metal and will hold up over time. With a lot of force, it can be bent, but will not bend during regular use.

This decorating comb and icing smoother is awesome. I do not know how I have ever made a cake without it (actually, I do, it is has been a very unsmooth cake, delicious, but not always pretty). I only needed the flat side, but I had to see what the other side did as well, and the ridge look is also very cool. It did not go with the particular theme of the cake I was working on, but I will DEFINITELY be using this for every cake I make in the future.

My cake was only three layers, so it worked fine length wise. However, I did not level the top of my cake, so it was a bit difficult to get the top and sides smooth together. That is definitely a user error though, not an issue with this tool.

This is basically sheet metal cut into the shapes shown. Pretty thick gauge and with a nice finish. Seems pretty sturdy. I have no issues with the quality. If you know how to use it they are fine enough.

I guess I am just not a fan of how opposite side of the flat one that has teeth which kind of poke your hand and can be uncomfortable while using. In theory it is nice to be able to have multiple tools in one, but it just wasn’t for me. I mainly use the flat side, so I went with another brand that I liked better and was thicker metal. That one also had a grip on it, so maybe if this one had a grip then poking my hand wouldn’t be an issue (but it doesn’t and it is).

Overall, not bad, just wasn’t for me. Comes from a good brand, so yeah, you can definitely work with it, I just went with another brand name and spent a little more. I will be keeping these though just because it is nice to have so many designs in just 2 cake tools.

I was specifically looking for an extra tall cake smoother because the one that I currently have is 5" and many of the cakes that I am decorating are taller than 5". So when I saw in the product description that this cake smoother/scraper was 10.9 x 5.1 x 0.5 inches, I thought that I had found the cake smoother that I wanted. But no - the packaging is 10.9 x 5.1 x 0.5 inches. The smoother is 5" - same as the one that I already have. Sure, I could have read more of the comments to discover this, but why wouldn't the product description match the PRODUCT!?!?!

This is my favorite cake decorating tool, I don’t think I could do a cake without it. I mainly just use the flat side for scraping but having the option to do textures is a nice feature. It’s so much better than the plastic scrapers because you can heat it up and get that nice smooth final finish.
