Seven Generations of Stewardship

Since the mid-1800’s, the Coombs family has been acting as responsible stewards of the forest, following a ‘sustainable’ approach to agriculture long before anyone had a specific name for it – or could conceive of any other way to farm. As part of a fabric of nearly 8000 maple farmers who are all preserving maple forests, Coombs Family Farms is doing more than making maple. We are helping to preserve crucial habitat for thousands of distinct plants and animals that need large intact tracts of forest to survive.

Get Real - Taste the Truth

In 1887, the first breakfast syrup that wasn’t pure maple was introduced. It was made of 45% maple syrup and 55% corn syrup. Its price compared to real maple syrup made it an instant hit. By the 1990s, most imitation syrup brands had eliminated maple syrup from their products entirely, opting to use high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), artificial flavorings and artificial colors instead. As a result, labeling laws in the United States were enacted to prohibit artificial syrups from using the word maple in their names.

Grade A Dark/Robust With a color and maple flavor more intense than Amber/Rich, this versatile grade is great as a topping and for cooking. Its strong maple flavor also lends itself to meat glazes, cooking recipes, and on top of waffles, pancakes, or oatmeal.	Grade A Amber/Rich Known for its smooth maple flavor and slightly darker than the Golden/Delicate grade. This distinctive taste is produced mid-season when the temperatures start to warm. Its unique and subtle flavor is most often used for table syrup. It is a good, average price when compared to other maple syrups on Amazon. The kind I normally buy is the lighter amber color grade A at $14 for 32oz (only several dollar difference), but with that not in stock any more I was on hunt for something else. I settled on this one because of the reviews. I've never had the darker color maple syrup before and now I won't go back to the lighter one. It came packaged nicely & securely with a seal on it (made me feel better knowing it couldn't have been tampered with, see pics). The delivery time was spot on. Now for the make it or break it, the taste... I immediately opened it up when it arrived and poured it into a clear glass cup (see pic). It is not a thick consistency, but not watery either. For what I like it was just right. I love the rich maple flavor of the darker syrup. It's sweet, but not to sweet. The best way I can describe the flavor is to compare it to homemade brown sugar, that is made from molasses & sugar only, and a bit more molasses to give it the darker brown sugar look and taste. I am so relieved and happy that this product held up to all the good reviews. I will definitely be a repeat customer. I hope this review helps. Especially with people like me who spent forever looking through reviews then comparing prices in hopes you'll like what you choose.

If you are a fan of watery, flavorless maple syrup, look elsewhere. This stuff is great! It's a dark amber, but not burnt. It has a caramel-like flavor, which is perfect on pancakes, waffles, French toast, etc. The maple taste shines through, and was obviously crafted by a professional. It takes more time to distill/evaporate maple sap to achieve this flavor, but it's definitely worth it. (In years past, we've made our own, but are too old to go slogging through the grove tapping and tending the buckets.) The stuff we made was great, but this is on par with our best efforts - - - in a good year. Well worth the price IMHO.

I used to buy Grade B dark robust 100% pure maple syrup from Trader Joe's which is from Quebec. However, this syrup is no longer available and so I looked on Amazon to see what I could find and so tried the Coombs Family Farms Grade A Dark Robust and it is wonderful! It is from Vermont. It is what formerly was called grade B - which does not infer lower quality, rather it infered the color and robustness of it.... I think so many people were thinking grade B meant lower quality and so now the maple syrup manufacturers call it "Grade A dark color robust taste". I like this grade of maple syrup because it has a richer and more full-on maple syrup flavor - to me. Highly recommend.

Our large family loves maple syrup and we have purchased this brand regularly for years. We prefer Grade B over Grade A because Grade B has a stronger maple flavor, but Coombs makes excellent Grade A syrups for those who prefer their syrup a little "lighter." We like to buy Coombs Grade B organic maple syrup but this is our go-to product during the weeks when organic is too expensive.

Pros: This size is good for our family, and a much better value than the tiny little glass bottles in health food stores that cost a fortune. The jug is easy to pour from and doesn't make a huge mess. The flavor is great and works well in all applications: topping for waffles or pancakes, making salad dressings or barbeque sauces, baking cornbread or muffins. I have done some research on Coombs Family Farms, and the syrup is responsibly produced and free of undesirable additives.

Cons: Not certified organic, which is the only reason I gave it four stars instead of five. Coombs does produce excellent organic syrups, and I rated their organic Grade B a five-star product. I would also love to see this available in half gallon or gallon sizes.

We did a test at home, see pic, of 3 brands. and we really like this.

The Coombs Family Farms Maple Syrup is more flavorful than the Whole Foods 365 brand, and has a good maple flavor we all thought was top notch. Maple syrup always has variations, but the Coombs is like an "A" or "A-", on a scale where "A+" is the best you every had.

The Escuminac Late Harvest is also quite delicious, but it's more perfumed and vegital, and a tad less maple. We all thought it was delicious, with multiple layers to the flavor, but Coombs is cheaper and has more of a normal, expected, comforting maple flavor.
