I talked to a dozen insiders for a story about how trouble has been brewing at The Wall Street Journal, where editor in chief Emma Tucker is facing an increasingly unhappy staff. Now that same staff is taking a step towards a historic strike. Tucker has been revamping the paper by cutting through red tape and livening up the writing. But Tucker, who was an outsider when she came in a year ago, also made a series of job cuts, including many higher-paid staff, that have eroded a lot of the goodwill many had about the new editorial direction. Journal leadership for its part defended the gradual cuts and shared stats showing that Tucker's new editorial direction is bearing fruit. But such moves tend to foster anxiety rather than motivation — especially at an institution unaccustomed to rapid change.
