New York mayor Eric Adams is on a mission to tackle one of the most stubborn health problems in the country: chronic disease in the African American community.

African Americans are heavier and sicker than any other group in the U.S., with nearly half of all Black adults suffering from some form of cardiovascular disease. After Adams woke up with severe vision loss one day in 2016, he learned that he was one of the nearly 5 million Black people living with diabetes-and, according to his doctor, he would have it for the rest of his life.

A police officer for more than two decades, Adams was a connoisseur of the fast-food dollar menu. Like so many Americans with stressful jobs, the last thing he wanted to think about was eating healthfully. Fast food was easy, cheap, and comfortable. His diet followed him from the squad car to the state senate, and then to Brooklyn Borough Hall, where it finally caught up with him.

But Adams was not ready to become a statistic. There was a better option besides medication and shots of insulin: food. Within three months of adopting a plant-based diet, he lost 35 pounds, lowered his cholesterol by 30 points, restored his vision, and reversed his diabetes. Now he is on a mission to revolutionize the health of not just the borough of Brooklyn, but of African Americans across the country.

Armed with the hard science and real-life stories of those who have transformed their bodies by changing their diet, Adams shares the key steps for a healthy, active life. With this book, he shows readers how to avoid processed foods, cut down on salt, get more fiber, and substitute beef, chicken, pork, and dairy with delicious plant-based alternatives. In the process he explores the origins of soul food-a cuisine deeply important to the Black community, but also one rooted in the horrors of slavery-and how it can be reimagined with healthy alternatives.

Features more than 50 recipes from celebrities and health experts, including Paul McCartney, Queen Afua, Jenné Claiborne, Bryant Jennings, Charity Morgan, Moby, and more!

The journey to good health begins in the kitchen-not the hospital bed!

Thank you Eric, such an important book!
5 Stars
Thank you Eric, such an important book!
This book is excellent, Eric hits all of the important topics that have been proven by research. He includes a lot of pertinent information including statistics and the first couple chapters of the book. It's a quick read, I listened to it on audiobook, which he narrated himself, which makes it that much better. He is very well spoken. And just look at how hot he looks on the cover, meow! Pictures speak for themselves. He touches on all of the important topics regarding food such as organic or not, reading labels, and more importantly, how different diseases and ailments are impacted by what we eat. 2/3 of people who develop serious Covid symptoms have one of four underlying conditions, obesity, diabetes, hypertension and heart failure. These are all things directly related to how we eat and how active we are. He also discusses doctors and the commonly given, yet misguided advice, which I've also found to be true in my food journey. I'd really fallen off the wagon recently with travel on my diet (or "livits" as Kanye likes to call it, lol), so this was a good reset and reminder of how we should all be eating for the health of our bodies and our planet. It's a short 4 1/2 audiobook that you can listen to in your car. I highly recommend it. Thank you Eric Adams!

I am reading this book out loud to my hubby, as a way of bonding and getting healthy together. He is typically cynical and quite frankly critical about most things A-Z but this is the first time I can remember that he has been open to this type of “bonding”. I took a chance that hubby would be more receptive and open to the book’s info if I read it out loud and it has worked! This book is so informative and well written, that it’s hard to put down. Being an SDA, I have known all of my life about the 7 laws of health, but have only been “playing” off and on at vegetarianism until now. In the few short days that we started reading Healthy at Last, we have made the monumental decision to live a vegetarian and eventually vegan lifestyle. Thank you so much for writing this book. You have turned a cynical man (my darling hubby) into a more compliant Individual who, by the way, was diagnosed as a diabetic about a week before I ordered the his book. Here’s to lowering his A1C and preventing myself and our little girl from a similar diagnosis.

March 23, 2021, this 66 year old was admitted to the ER, unrelated to diabetes. Routine blood work showed fasting glucose of 123. I know this is not as bad as some but this told me I needed to do something drastic. During the pandemic I gained a lot of weight due to cooking lots of foods that were delicious but very unhealthy. Ordered glucometer immediately, this verified my glucose was prediabetes range. Searched Amazon books for diabetes reversal and came across this gem on Kindle written by Eric Adams who currently is the amazing mayor of New York. This book may very well save my life as he is so relatable and through his dialogue gave me the knowledge and inspiration to make the changes needed for success. It took several months for my glucose numbers to fall into the normal range and it WAS NOT easy but so worth it. I have lost 45 pounds and am aiming toward 10 more. Confession: I am not always 100% vegan but I try on most days. I have learned what foods cause sugar spikes and they are typical: pasta, white rice, white potatoes , sugar. For some reason corn is ok in reasonable amounts. Typical breakfast is almond milk smoothie with blueberries, avocado, ground flaxseed and organic plant protein. If I have lunch it is a salad with legumes and lots of vegetables. Dinner is a hearty bean and vegetable soup with salad; roasted vegetables and whole grains; or sometimes fish and vegetables. If I snack it is almonds or almond butter with 1/2 apple. Going on over one year now and it is rare my fasting glucose is above 100. I also try to get in 5 days per week of aerobic and weight training. Have had many glucose A1C tests since beginning this program and all results have been normal. I cannot thank Eric Adams enough for his inspiration. I purchased several books but his was the one that changed my path for good. Take care and read this book if you need help with your glucose numbers and are ready to be serious. The rewards are so worth the dedication and after you learn how to make your menus work it gets much easier. Like Eric says, be adventurous and try lots of different vegetables, fruits, spices to make your meals interesting.

I have numerous books on diet and health and am now recently learning more about prediabetes. I am in no way a novice as it comes to healthful living. Most of my life I have been on a plant based diet. This book looked interesting and it does not disappoint! It shipped so quickly that I was really taken aback! In addition to that, the author allowed the introduction to be downloaded to kindle before the print copy arrived. That was a nice courtesy. I read that and could not wait fo the book to come. The book arrived yesterday and I stayed up last night reading it and purchased items for grocery delivery to sample at least one recipe.

What I like is that I have confidence in the accuracy of the information. That is most critical. He cited the known movers and shakers in the field that I already know and have read. I did not grow up on soul food in my family, but I understand it and know families who ate/eat this way. The book is well organized. It reads well. I am versed in healthful living, but yet I still learned something; such as how to select nutrient dense bread. This book works well for people no matter where they are in their health journey. I like that he does not promote himself. He seems to be using his platform and voice to help others. In that vein, he seems to be transparent with his own health journey and that of his loved ones. Then he promotes other health gurus and includes sampling’s of their recipes at the end of his book. So I am very pleased with the purchase and see myself referring back to this book over and over. Highly recommended (spoken in my librarian voice😊). Got to go! My groceries just arrived!

This is a very informative book. I enjoyed reading it. We are new to PBWF and have been feeling good with very good energy since we have been on it a month and cut our oil nearly out. My husband has even noticed his diabetic neuropathy he has had for 10yrs has greatly decreased. Yay!

There was one thing I wish the book had. Eric said he is oil free. However many of the recipes in the book have oil. I would of liked to have modifications in the recipes to adjust for that, sodium & sugar. One of the cookie recipes has 1c of maple syrup (seems like alot for a diabetic) but they are tasty. And the jackfruit jacks that we tried were very high in sodium. So thats why I gave it 4 stars. However the BY burgers were good.

All in all. I would definitely recommend this book to read. As we have already been doing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book for beginners, compelling stories, and motivation!
Reviewed in Canada on November 25, 2020
Great book if you’re new to wfpb, a little watered down if you already are experienced in the topic (which is not a criticism, as an information source it’s just a better book for beginners). Much of the book ties into the experiences of the black community, which was a very interesting perspective & super informative. Full of very compelling stories, testimonies, and experiences, from a wide range of people with a variety of illnesses. Covers all the major issues, including heart disease and his own diabetes etc. Great book if you’re interested in the success stories of others, looking for entry level information, and motivation. The book is a very easy to read and understand, and not overly medicalized and science-y.
