C40 is a network of nearly 100 world-leading cities taking urgent action to confront the climate crisis. 🌳 🚴♀️
About us
C40 is a network of nearly 100 mayors of the world’s leading cities who are working to deliver the urgent action needed right now to confront the climate crisis and create a future where everyone, everywhere, can thrive. Mayors of C40 cities are committed to using a science-based and people-focused approach to help the world limit global heating to 1.5°C and build healthy, equitable and resilient communities. Through a Global Green New Deal, mayors are working alongside a broad coalition of representatives from labour, business, the youth climate movement and civil society to go further and faster than ever before. The current Chair of C40 is Mayor of London Sadiq Khan; and three-term Mayor of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg serves as President of the Board. C40’s work is made possible by our three strategic funders: Bloomberg Philanthropies, Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), and Realdania.

Cities are where 70% of the world's energy is consumed - the just energy transition will not happen without them. Today, I represented C40 Cities and our mayors at the International Energy Agency (IEA)'s first-ever Global Summit on People-Centred Clean Energy Transitions alongside 200 global leaders. Though the lion's share of decisions about energy supply are taken at a national level – a big chunk of the related jobs and fears from workers and communities about transition happen at the city level. But there is hope. City governments, who generally have higher climate ambition than at a national level, are showing what a just transition looks like, which is crucial to building public support for climate ambition. Cities can play a key role in transitioning to more decentralised, decarbonised and just energy systems. It is one of C40 Cities' top priorities to support cities to create good, green jobs and foster a just energy transition. We partner with many of the organisations at the International Energy Agency (IEA) today in doing that, especially our friends from the trade union movement - International Trade Union Confederation - ITUC, International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF), BWI - GLOBAL UNION - Building and Wood Workers' International and the Just Transition Centre. We owe it to future generations to end the era of fossil fuels for good and usher in a new era, one that prioritises people, powered by clean energy. #CleanEnergy 📸 © International Energy Agency

The recent devastating floods experienced by Dubai are a stark reminder of the impact of the climate crisis on our communities, and on cities worldwide. The climate crisis is real; it is caused by fossil fuel emissions, and it looks like this. https://c40.me/3WfepvU

Can mayors really stop climate breakdown? This week on the podcast, we turn the tables on host David Miller to answer just that 👀 Guest host Jodi Lewchuk of the University of Toronto Press asks David about his bestselling book, “Solved”, and how David’s experience as the former Mayor of Toronto and his work with the C40 Centre for City Climate Policy and Economy has shown him firsthand how mayors are creating a more sustainable planet. 🎧 Tune in to the latest episode of Cities 1.5: https://lnkd.in/eQ3ETGNc Cities 1.5 is produced by the University of Toronto Press in collaboration with the C40 Centre for City Climate Policy and Economy. 📸 David Miller

The latest 'European State of the Climate' report reveals alarming trends in climate-related disasters across Europe, marking 2023 as a year of severe heatwaves and widespread flooding that impacted the health, safety, and wellbeing of millions of urban residents. At a glance...👇 🌡️ July 2023 was Europe's second hottest on record, intensifying urban heat islands and raising health risks. 🌊 Floods became more frequent and severe, challenging city infrastructure and endangering residents. 💧 Droughts impacted water systems, threatening agriculture and drinking water accessibility. Read the report by Copernicus ECMWF here: https://c40.me/4d8wge7 C40's European mayors understand the urgent need for targeted climate action to address these risks, but they need a seat at the table where decisions on climate policy are made. "Many of Europe's mayors are already taking action to protect ecosystems and restore urban nature, secure their cities' food systems and water supplies, and protect the most vulnerable... But it is not enough for cities to act alone. Through multi-level partnerships, national leaders, businesses, and civil society must urgently collaborate with cities and their leaders to protect millions from these climate-induced hazards," said Júlia López Ventura, Regional Director for Europe at C40 Cities, commenting on the European Environment Agency's first-ever European Climate Risk Assessment published last month.
