A detailed review of the upcoming Intel Core i7-11700K 8 Core Rocket Lake Desktop CPU has been posted by Lab501. The review provides us a detailed performance insight of the upcoming Rocket Lake-S CPU. The i7-11700K will be an 8 core and 16 thread CPU which will compete directly against AMD’s Ryzen 7 lineup.

Intel has gained a lot of performance thanks to the new Cypress cove cores and according to the current information, it will have better single-threaded performance compared to AMD’s Zen 3 based Ryzen 5000 series CPUs. The Core i9-11900K will go against the Ryzen 9 5900X and the Core i7-11700K against the Ryzen 7 5800X.

The Intel Core i7-11700K is an 8 core and 16 thread CPU having a base clock of 3.6 GHz and a single-core boost clock of 5.0 GHz which goes down to 4.6 GHz on all cores. This lower-binned chip will sit at around 225-250W (PL2) limit while the PL1 limit will be standard at 125W.

In the performance test by Lab501, the i7-11700K was tested on a Z590 motherboard with 16 GB of DDR4-3200 MHz memory (CL14) and an RTX 2080 Ti graphics card. The CPU was beaten in the majority of the performance benchmarks by its competitor, the Ryzen 7 5800X, even while consuming more power than the Ryzen CPU.

Even in gaming, the i7-11700K cannot convincingly beat the Ryzen 7 5800X, barely beating the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X in a few titles while getting beaten by the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X in other titles. The source reports that the average performance gain for Intel’s Rocket Lake CPUs over AMD’s Zen 3 based Vermeer CPUs should be around 1-2%.

The most shocking thing is that the Intel processor is failing to deliver performance, even while consuming more power than the Ryzen processors. the Intel Core i7-11700K system consumed 286W which is 64W higher than the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X configured setup and 76W higher than the Core i7-10700K.

At the same time, the Intel CPU does run cooler at around 71C whereas the Ryzen 7 5800X operates at around 89C. All this is very worrying for Intel who was looking to regain the lost throne of best CPUs from Ryzen. Looks like Intel will have to work even harder to overcome AMD now.
