Tributes pour in after former Dundalk and Waterford player Karolis Chvedukas dies aged 32

LEAGUE OF IRELAND have been among those to pay tribute to former Dundalk and Waterford player Karolis Chvedukas.

The Lithuanian player died at the age of 32 in his home country after having played for Waterford United and Dundalk.

He had been playing with his home town club Marijampolė City last season.

Chvedukas played 20 times for Lithuania between 2012-2019 after making his first international appearance in a friendly against Armenia in March of 2014.

Chvedukas signed for League of Ireland side Dundalk on 8 January 2018. He scored his first goal for the club in an 8-0 demolition of Limerick on 1 March 2018.

On 8 February 2019 Dundalk announced Chvedukas left the club by mutual consent. Shortly later Waterford announced his signing on their official website.

He was signed by then Lilywhite boss Stephen Kenny in 2018 before Alan Reynolds brought him to Waterford.

The LOI, Dundalk and Waterford FC posted tributes to the player after news of his passing was made public.

League of Ireland wrote: "Everyone at the League of Ireland sends on our deep sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of Karolis Chvedukas after his tragic passing. Karolis played for Dundalk and Waterford during his time in the League of Ireland and will be missed by all."

Dundalk added: "We were shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Karolis Chvedukas this afternoon."

And Waterford said: "Waterford FC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Blues midfielder Karolis Chvedukas," Waterford FC said. "The Lithuanian international played 22 times for the club in the 2019 season. Our thoughts are with Karolis' family and friends."

The Lithuanian FA also paid their condolences to their former international: "On Monday morning, the Lithuanian football community received tragic news - the Lithuanian football player, former member of the national team, Karolis Chvedukas unexpectedly died. The Lithuanian Football Federation, on behalf of the entire community, expresses its deepest condolences to the relatives and friends of the deceased in this difficult hour.”
