**Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in History**

“Extraordinary…a great American biography” (The New Yorker) of the most important African American of the 19th century: Frederick Douglass, the escaped slave who became the greatest orator of his day and one of the leading abolitionists and writers of the era.

As a young man Frederick Douglass (1818–1895) escaped from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland. He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. His very existence gave the lie to slave owners: with dignity and great intelligence he bore witness to the brutality of slavery.

Initially mentored by William Lloyd Garrison, Douglass spoke widely, using his own story to condemn slavery. By the Civil War, Douglass had become the most famed and widely travelled orator in the nation. In his unique and eloquent voice, written and spoken, Douglass was a fierce critic of the United States as well as a radical patriot. After the war he sometimes argued politically with younger African Americans, but he never forsook either the Republican party or the cause of black civil and political rights.

In this “cinematic and deeply engaging” (
The New York Times Book Review) biography, David Blight has drawn on new information held in a private collection that few other historian have consulted, as well as recently discovered issues of Douglass’s newspapers. “Absorbing and even moving…a brilliant book that speaks to our own time as well as Douglass’s” (The Wall Street Journal), Blight’s biography tells the fascinating story of Douglass’s two marriages and his complex extended family. “David Blight has written the definitive biography of Frederick Douglass…a powerful portrait of one of the most important American voices of the nineteenth century” (The Boston Globe).

In addition to the Pulitzer Prize,
Frederick Douglass won the Bancroft, Parkman, Los Angeles Times (biography), Lincoln, Plutarch, and Christopher awards and was named one of the Best Books of 2018 by The New York Times Book Review, The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, The San Francisco Chronicle, and Time.

Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of October 2018:: There are many biographies of Frederick Douglass, but there has not been a major one written in nearly twenty five years. David W. Blight’s new book is a valuable contribution to the understanding of Douglass as both a man and as a historical figure, utilizing papers that had not previously been available. Although direct in his message, Douglass, like many great men, was a person of contradictions. Blight explores those contradictions, painting Douglass as a complete human being, even as he lays out the clear argument for his greatness. This thorough and highly readable biography traces Douglass’s entire life, starting on a plantation in Maryland, covering his education and eventual escape, his two marriages, his complicated relationship with his family, and his work as an abolitionist and orator. In the end, the reader will walk away with a deeper grasp of a still deeply misunderstood chapter of American history, as well as understanding, respect, and admiration for one of the county’s greatest figures. --Chris Schluep, for the Amazon Book Review

Review

“Cinematic and deeply engaging. . . . a tour de force of storytelling.” -- Brent Staples ― The New York Times Book Review

"Absorbing and even moving . . . Mr. Blight displays his lifelong interest in Douglass on almost every page, and his own voice is active and eloquent throughout the narrative. It is a book that speaks to our own time as well as Douglass’s. . . . A brilliant book.” -- John Stauffer ―
The Wall Street Journal

“The first major biography of Douglass in nearly three decades. . . . Blight isn’t looking to overturn our understanding of Douglass, whose courage and achievements were unequivocal, but to complicate it — a measure by which this ambitious and empathetic biography resoundingly succeeds.” -- Jennifer Szalai ―
The New York Times

“Extraordinary. . . . Blight has certainly written, in the book’s texture and density and narrative flow—one violent and provocative incident arriving right after another—a great American biography." -- Adam Gopnik ―
The New Yorker

“A consistently engrossing book that is likely to remain the definitive account of Douglass’s life for many years to come.” -- Eric Foner ―
The Nation

“A stunning achievement. Blight captures an icon in full humanity. From riveting drama in slavery and Civil War, his Douglass rises into clairvoyant genius on the blinkered centrality of race in our struggle for freedom.” -- Taylor Branch, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of America in the King Years

“Extraordinary. . . . In Blight’s pages, [Douglass’s] voice again rings out loud and clear, melancholy and triumphant — still prophesying, still agitating, still calling us to action.” -- Adam Goodheart ―
The Washington Post

“David Blight has written
the definitive biography of Frederick Douglass. With extraordinary detail he illuminates the complexities of Douglass’s life and career and paints a powerful portrait of one of the most important American voices of the 19th century. . . . Magisterial.” -- Eddie S. Glaude, Jr. ― The Boston Globe

The improbable story of Frederick Douglass told with remarkable clarity
5 Stars
The improbable story of Frederick Douglass told with remarkable clarity
The story of the contributions of African Americans to American history has been spotty at best but the story of Frederick Douglass exemplifies that viewing a person from the outside misses the greatness that is inside of each of us. Douglass's story is an American story regardless of race but, in spite of hatred, racism and ignorance. America has proven that its ideals are founded on a bedrock of truths and when we live up to these ideals the true greatness of this country will be achieved by seeing the value of people as human.....plain and simple.

Obviously well written and researched. Very thorough examination of Douglass’ life. It shows clearly what slavery was and how it affects a person’s life. Not a page turner but if you want to understand Douglass’ life this is the book. Highly recommend.

My supposedly-good schooling decades ago dropped the ball when it came to Frederick Douglass. His remarkable life is well documented here. The book opened my eyes to the day-to-day reality of slavery, the political tumult before the Civil War and the nature of Reconstruction and "The Restoration."

The title of this book is a fitting epitaph to the great man, Frederick Douglass. In this magisterial work, "Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom" David Blight of Yale University writes the culmination of a lifetime of work and diligent study. The result of all that study is a penetrating portrait and a seemingly comprehensive biography of Frederick Douglass.

Before reading this book, it would be wise to read Blight's "Acknowledgements" section at the end of the book, because in reading his acknowledgements one can more fully appreciate the breadth and length and depth of Blight's work. The herculean task of imbibing and conveying the life of one of history's truly great men is really beyond description. But thanks to Blight's earnest persistence, generations of Americans will be able to appreciate Douglass in all his fullness.

So much of America in its present form can be better understood by reading the book. Have we arrived at a place of justice for all races in our society? How would Douglass describe our current divisions? What is the way forward? Douglass devoted his life to clawing his way out of racial injustice and prejudice, and he did this by his hard work, his constant self-education, his humanly prophetic voice, and his peripatetic travels to every corner of this Nation and to the Continent, all in service of the concept of freedom.

One cannot read this work without being moved with compassion for the young Douglass as he began life on the plantation, as he escaped for freedom, as he fought injustice, and as he devoted himself to a cause greater than himself. It is really not an understatement that Douglass gave up his life for the cause of freedom. Douglass clearly and consistently and prophetically called his Nation back to its founding principles, and he serves as an example of the power of language and the power of a life lived for a cause.

The power in Blight's work is the breadth of the history, the depth of the research, and the laser focus on Douglass and his written and spoken words. Having read this book one feels as if one has lived through this period of history and that is indeed an accomplishment. This history will stand the test of time as do the words and the principles of Frederick Douglass, Prophet of Freedom. Happy reading.

Brilliantly written. Eye opening on this aspect of black history. Fascinating study of a man moved by his Christian faith towards prophetic preaching and action to fight against slavery. I was left feeling why have I only just come across him. A very intelligent and brilliantly written biography.

An extremely well written biography about one of the giant figures of America's 19th Century. I am 83 years old, and although Douglass was one of the most recognized persons of his time, both in the U.S. and Europe, it was profoundly eye-opening and embarrassing for me to realize how little he had been mentioned in the history books I grew up with. Despite his enormous efforts and accomplishments, we still have long way to go on both sides of the Atlantic to reach his expectations.
