The Best Eye Shadow for Your Eye Color

Your eyes are already gorgeous. Duh. But if you want them to stand out and demand attention that much more—then keep reading. We called up LA-based makeup artist Matthew VanLeeuwen to get his take on which eye shadow shades will help enhance your big brown, blue, hazel, and green eyes.

If you have brown eyes like B's, you're going to want to go for terracotta or reddish-brown/golden shades. Any warm shadow in that color family will add depth to your eyes.

Plus, if you choose one with metallic flecks in it, it will bring out any golden tones you might have.

Are you a green-eyed girl like Bryce? If so, consider plum eye shadow your new BFF.

"It makes green eyes become more vibrant and look greenish yellow—which is a good thing," says Leeuwen. "And, if you use a purple shade that's dark enough, it comes off as black but still gives you the benefits of plum color."

"Hazel eyes are the middle ground between green and brown, which means you can pull off shades from both color families," says Leeuwen. (Lucky you!)

For this eye color, Leeuwen tends to lean toward golden brown tones, like Nicole is wearing here. He suggests using brown as your base shadow (apply it from the lash line to the crease) and then patting a little gold shadow on the center of your upper lid. You can also line your lower lash line with gold, too.

To highlight blue eyes, Leeuwen likes to use any shadow that looks like it's been mixed with a heather gray tone, like a gray brown or taupe-y plum.

"These gray undertones play off of the blue tones and intensify your eye color as soon as you swipe the shadow on," he says.
