One of the things you’ll want to buy now and wear right now is the corset belt, an accessory that we’ve seen pop up on the Fall runways, most notably at Prada. There, laced midriff-cinchers were layered over coats, drawing attention to the waist, and giving a fresh, even feminist, twist to the innerwear-as-outerwear trend. “It’s interesting to see such a feminine, sensual thing being worn over clothes in a way that’s not suggestive—more as an accessory than a wear-alone piece of clothing,” says Vogue.com Assistant Market Editor Anny Choi, who shopped the look six ways.

Out from under, the shape-making corset is being put to new uses that have little to do with bedroom antics or dressed-up eveningwear and everything to do with upping your day game. Worn over tailored, menswear pieces like coats and shirts, the corset belt flirts with ideas of gender—and the girl/boy mix doesn’t have to stop at the middle, either: You might want to ground the look with a stylish brogue, or take a cue from Miuccia Prada, with a hiking boot. Either way, the corset belt is sure to take your look up a notch or two.
