KAWARTHA LAKES-18-year-old Jacob Downey of the Downeyville area passed away suddenly on Wednesday.
Downey was a first-year student at Queen’s University in Kingston who put out a statement today:
“The Queen’s community is remembering Jacob Downey, who passed suddenly after a medical emergency on Wednesday, Sept. 29. Jacob was 18 years old.
Jacob was in his first year of studies in kinesiology in the Faculty of Arts and Science with a goal of pursuing a career in sports medicine.
An excellent student and athlete, Jacob was one of three recipients of the Peterborough Petes Education Fund Minor Hockey Scholarship program prior to arriving at Queen’s from his hometown of Lindsay, ON. Jacob had many friends from his activities and had already developed a number of friendships with fellow students and residents of Jean Royce Hall.
Jacob will be deeply missed by his parents, Peter and Laurie, his extended family, and friends.”
Officials say further details regarding a celebration of Jacob’s life will be shared with the community when available.
Downey was an accomplished hockey player, playing with the Peterborough Petes during the 2019-2020 season. “Jacob will be missed, but never forgotten,” said Coach Scott, Peterborough Petes.

Downey is the second Ontario university student to pass away suddenly recently.
A University of Ottawa football player Francis Perron died shortly after the Gee-Gees first game of the season on Saturday September 18th.
In a statement posted on the Gee-Gees website, uOttawa President Jacques Fremont said Perron died shortly after Saturday’s game between the Gee-Gees and the University of Toronto in Toronto.
Perron, 25, was a Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Ottawa, and a defensive lineman.
