REGGAE BOY: Tremaine 'Tan Tan' Stewart

TREMAINE ‘TAN TAN’ STEWART, a winger/striker for Dunbeholden FC in the Jamaican Red Stripe Premier League, collapsed while playing ‘corner league’ football and was pronounced dead at the Spanish Town Hospital yesterday (April 18).

The Spanish Town-born 33-year-old dropped down during the kick around in Gordon Pen, St. Catherine, with the exact cause of death yet to be disclosed.

Although Stewart transferred to Dunbeholden FC from Waterhouse FC at the end of the 2019-20 season, he had yet to kick a ball for his new club due to the suspension of the island’s top-flight since March 2019 because of the coronavirus crisis.

He kicked off his career as an eager 18-year-old for August Town in 2006, then moved to Portmore United two years later.

His talents were beginning to take shape, and once drafted into the national team he made an instant impact. He made his debut for Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz against Cuba in February 2012, and five days later grabbed his first goal in their 3-2 success over New Zealand. Stewart only managed one more strike for the Boyz, making a dozen international appearances.

He left Jamaica in 2012 for the cold climes of Norway, where he represented Aalesunds FK for two terms with six goals from 34 appearances.

Stewart made a season-long deal with Waterhouse FC, bagging nine goals in 18 games, which attracted attention from an array of North European clubs. He opted to sign a 12-month contract with Rovaniemen Palloseura, but failed to score in his four matches for the Finland outfit.

A return to Jamaica saw him as a familiar face at Portmore United for the 2016-17 campaign, but he was then snapped up by Waterhouse FC although his 2019-20 season was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stewart is survived by his wife and two daughters.
