Last week, GDI was honored to participate in the "Beyond Disinformation: Strengthening our societies against Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI)" conference held by the European External Action Service. It's never been more critical for democracies to strengthen their safeguards against the rising threat of FIMI, and governments, platforms and civil society all have crucial roles to play. Our co-founder, Clare Melford, participated in a panel highlighting the need for greater regulation of algorithms and expanded partnerships with civil society to ensure platform accountability. Global brands are funding media outlets that spread pro-Kremlin disinformation in Serbia and Bulgaria, exacerbating the fragile political situation in Balkan states such as last month's contentious elections in Serbia. GDI is proud to have contributed to a new report from the Balkan Free Media Initiative and CRTA - Center for Research, Transparency and Accountability, investigating how hundreds of millions of euros in advertising dollars are flowing to harmful sites. States have always struggled to live up to the promises laid out in UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights since it was adopted in 1948, but at the present moment, securing those rights may be more difficult than ever. That's because so many major threats to human rights, from climate change to the rise of extremism, require states to agree on the reality of these problems and take joint action to address them - and in our modern, muddied information ecosystem, agreeing on a shared reality is much easier said than done. 2023 is on track to be the hottest year ever recorded. Record-breaking wildfires, floods, droughts, tornadoes and more have devastated communities worldwide. As climate change intensifies, it's become harder for climate denialists to spread their message - so now, they're shifting gears. Climate delayism is the idea that climate action does more harm than good for society and therefore must be delayed as long as possible. But with the world at such a dangerous crossroads, there isn't a moment to waste. In recent months, GDI has analysed climate delayism narratives that closely resemble climate denial conspiracy theories and disinformation. This suggests climate delayism isn't a new tactic at all, but a new and perhaps far more dangerous version of denial. And as world leaders convene for #COP28 next week, they need to take note. A free market depends on consumer choice. So why do brand safety critics want to stop advertisers from choosing where they spend their money? As more and more companies realize that advertising next to #disinformation hurts their brands and profits, they're demanding better #brandsafety tools and insight from #adtech to protect themselves and their customers. And when disinformation peddlers lose ad revenue, they hit back. So it's no surprise that we've been seeing more attacks on brand safety as #censorship this year.
