I just received the single volume for Matthews Gospel as a taster, as I currently use the ESV single volume journals and this review includes a brief comparison of the two. Here are my thoughts.
MY PERSONAL LIKES:
1. Black letter edition (I know this won’t be a plus for everyone, but I like to use colour coded marking in my journals and red-letter editions suck when I want to highlight the red letters with a red/orange/pink highlighter… just my preference)
2. NKJV: I use my journals for exegesis & theological notes, so I prefer the more literal end of the translation spectrum. The NKJV is the first of my personal go to translations anyway (along with the NASB 1977 & NASB 1995 and the Amplified, but as my church uses the ESV, I tend to use it too), so a double plus. I also like a translation that uses Upper Case Capital Letters for personal pronouns when referring to deity, so is that a triple plus?
COMPARISON TO THE ESV (MATTHEWS GOSPEL)
NOTE: In the two photos the NKJV is the one on the left (ESV right), NKJV is the top one (ESV bottom).
1. Size is equal to that of the ESV, including thickness.
2. The NKJV print is significantly larger and clearer than the ESV, and seems bolder (see photo).
3. The NKJV has 5 additional pages for notes at the end compared to 2 in the ESV.
3. The NKJV paper is roughly the same thickness, but brilliant white, as opposed to the hint of cream with the ESV.
4. The ESV has allowed slightly larger margins on the page with text (See photo) for more notes?
5. The ESV has narrower lines on the opposing page and fainter, perhaps allowing for more, but smaller notes.
6. The NKJV retains its minimal textual notes, which I find somewhat helpful.
7. Both use their respective translation’s paragraph headings.
8. The NKJV includes a short book introduction which the ESV has left out, which may be helpful to some.
CONCLUSION
I will be going more towards the NKJV due primarily for the reasons stated, but all things considered, there really isn’t much practical difference, so it will ultimately down to each person’s preference, probably based on translation. However, for me, the larger clearer text of the NKJV would easily swing it I wasn’t bothered about translation. I would therefore recommend the NKJV first.
