Are Young People Transitioning Genders Because It’s Trendy?

'I want to be transgender, it’s the new black... '

(Chris Parker, Headline USA) A growing number of young people could be choosing gender reassignment procedures simply because the transition is trendy, with some teens likening it to fashion accessories.

The number of teen minors, ranging in age from 13-17, identifying as transgender has doubled over the past five years. About 300,000 across the US now call themselves transgender, reported The Daily Wire.

There is also a growing concern among parents and healthcare professionals that teens are being manipulated by trends and peer pressure into gender reassignment procedures.

One Australian doctor was told by a teen, “I want to be transgender, it’s the new black.” He also reported an increase in the number of teens mutilating themselves over gender dysphoria.

Public schools are also pushing gender dysphoria on teens and young children. The federal government has threatened to pull lunch funding from schools that don’t teach transgender lesson plans. More schools are also setting aside time and resources for Drag Queen Story Hour.

Doctors are pushing for transgender procedures as well, according to the New York Post. One single mother was told by a doctor, in front of her child, “if you don’t affirm your daughter’s gender identity, or get her the help she needs, and she kills herself, you’re going to feel awfully guilty.”

A growing number of liberal activists want laws that allow minors to opt for transgender transitions without parental approval. They claim that gender reassignment procedures are crucial before puberty finishes.

However, adults who transitioned as minors are increasingly condemning the practice, reported The Spectator. A majority feel that “they did not receive an adequate evaluation from a doctor or mental health professional before starting transition.”

A 2019 study published by the American Journal of Psychiatry also concluded that “when it comes to the mental health of those diagnosed with gender dysphoria, there is no advantage of [reassignment] surgery.”

More states are banning gender transition procedures for children. Florida is leading the way, with its health department stating, “Studies presenting the benefits to mental health, including those claiming that the services prevent suicide, are either low or very low quality and rely on unreliable methods such as surveys and retrospective analyses, both of which are cross-sectional and highly biased.”

Still, under the Biden administration, school systems that refuse to promote gender dysphoria may face backlash from the federal government.
