Billionaire Mark Cuban

Mark Cuban might be the luckiest man from the dot-com era. While others lost fortunes, the outspoken Cuban sold Internet media service Broadcast.com to Yahoo, netting himself a cool $1.7 billion. Cuban, 45, used spare change to buy the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks. And the next several weeks could be his most eventful yet. The Mavs are in the playoffs and he’s co-producing a movie starring Robert De Niro. But his most high-profile venture is "The Benefactor," a reality-TV show for ABC that could do for Cuban what "The Apprentice" did for real-estate mogul Donald Trump. In the show, Cuban will award $1 million of his fortune to a stranger.

College Station, TX: What kind of competition is "The Benefactor" going to be? I read somewhere a couple of weeks ago that you had no idea what contestants were going to do on the show and that you might just pick someone out to win a million bucks. How do I get on a show like that?!?

Mark Cuban: Imagine you and 15 friends in a house, and I walked in and told you that in 3 weeks, 1 of you is going to leave the house with $1M dollars.

All you have to do is convince me why to give it to you and not the other 15. Of course Im telling the other 15 the same thing.

Its going to be a competition thats going to be fun, brutal, entertaining, and surprising, and when its over, there will be 1 person walking out with a check for a million bucks

Im fired up because we have such a diverse group of people, and I like them all, so its going to be tough to decide.


New York, NY: Are you trying to piggy back on the success of "The Apprentice" by offering Kwame a job?

Mark Cuban: I dont need to piggyback on anyone.. Unless of course you want to give me a ride from the car to the arena...

Actually, i was at a party with a friend, and about 5 of Kwames buddies came up to me and started telling how they had all been talking with Kwame and how he had said he would rather work for me, he really loved what i had done, etc, etc. They asked if i would stick around to meet and talk with him. So i did, was impressed and we talked about a job.

I liked the show, and so I got a chance to watch Kwame in action, so like i told him, I knew more about him than anyone I had ever interviewed.

Birmingham, Alabama: Is the key to your success that you found a trustworthy friend from you college to start a company with or that you went out and started a computer company by yourself early on? And if you never had any experience before, how did you go out and start a company and do so well? What is your advice for students, especially college graduates, for having a very effective work ethic? Do you value job experience over getting an MBA Or vice vers? Thank you. Parakash

Mark Cuban: I started my first several companies with no money at all. Its a misconception that you have to go out and raise money to start a company. Sweat Equity is the best capital for a company. When you have an idea, or a dream for a company, the first thing to do is not go out and raise money, its to find customers. If you have a customer, then you have someone willing to pay for your product or service, and that makes it easy to start.

as far as mba vs job. The key is knowing the industry you are in and having a strong general business understanding. I think you always have to understand accounting, finance, marketing and sales. I started reading books on those topics when i was in high school. I took classes in college. I didnt need an MBA, i made sure i knew the language of business so that i could run my businesses effectively.
It takes a lot of work, but it's essential.

Mark Cuban: Then you know something I dont. I never said that. One of the problems with the sports media is that truth and accuracy is never an important part of what they write. I have never, ever had a fact checker from a newspaper call me about a story in the sports section.

Hopefully sports editors are learning from the problems some bigger papers are having with erroneous reporting.


Plano TX: Mark, Thus far, has there been anything that has surprised you or caught you off guard in the process of casting for the Benefactor? Pam

Mark Cuban: Not so much off guard, but i've been pleasantly surprised at how cool people are, and how freaky some people can be.

Both are good and entertaining for the show.


Ames, IA: If you were not a billionaire, hadn't had any dealing with Broadcast.com, etc., what would you be doing with your life/career?

Mark Cuban: bartending or working in computer sales somewhere and having a blast with my life....and driving a car that needed its oil changed every 50 miles

Mark Cuban: born in squirrel hill, moved to scott township (birdland, meadowlark dr), then mt lebanon.


Tarrytown NEW YORK: It is widely known that you read your email. Do you actually read each one or do you have staff reading it? Do you save and/or file any of them?

Mark Cuban: I read every one. I dont respond to everyone because of time, but no one reads them but me

and i keep many, but not all


Carol Stream,IL: What criteria did you use to pick contestants for "The Benefactor?

Mark Cuban: we wanted a cross section of people. Different personalities from different parts of the country, but we wanted them to all be very competititve and ready to fight for the million dollars.

Mark Cuban: i like them, but you have to do your own homework


Naples, Florida: I saw the repeat last night of your 60 minutes interview. Do you turn down a lot of interview requests or are you able to grant most of them? What do you think of the way the pieces portray you?

Mark Cuban: I turn down 90 pct of them. I thought it would be cool, if not a little scary to be on 60 minutes, and i wanted a piece that included my wife and daughter that we could show my daughter when she was older

Actually , i never watch them. I couldnt watch 60 mins last night. I just get wierded out when I watch myself

Mark Cuban: score more points than the kings

On to my questions: With the influx of "offensive" talent during last year's offseason to the roster, do you see any urgency to adding some defensive specialists? A Theo Ratliff-type player comes to mind.

Mark Cuban: we are always looking to improve, but its never that easy to add the perfect player. We just try to always get better

Silver Spring, MD: Mr. Cuban, in today's "win now" NBA, do you consider drafting a high school player that may be a 2-3 year project a smart business move?

Mark Cuban: probably not, unless the guy is amazing. If you look at our track record since i got to the mavs we havent drafted a hs kid, and have had mostly college grads

Mark Cuban: i do a lot of smelling, and there are a lot of roses at my house..


Aventura, FL: Mark, What is your current strategy for growing your fortune? Do you have any exposure in the forex and stock markets?

Mark Cuban: I own 3 stocks. I have a rule, never invest in something unless you have an advantage. i stick to companies in industries I know very, very well. To me anything else is a suckers game.

Remember, this. There is always someone selling you the stock or futures or whatever, so they think you are wrong.....make sure you know why you are right, and are positive or dont do it


Lexington, KY: I am currently trying to decide which graduate business school to attend, and the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University is one of my options. How important was your business degree to your success and do you feel like IU gave you and "edge" over graduates from other schools? Thanks.

Mark Cuban: it helped me a ton. I learned a lot in class, but i learned far more on campus

Mark Cuban: no


Danville, Illinois: I've been behind you 100% in your attempt to improve the referees. What is the best thing to have come out of that effort? Dr. Grant

Mark Cuban: They completey restructured the officiating dept. The guy I got in trouble for saying couldnt work at a dairy queen is no longer there. They brought in a consultant to look at how the department was set up, and he basically reconfigured it just as I had proposed.

We arent all the way there, but we are much, much closer.


rico colorado: I am wondering if is unrealistic to get Shawn Bradley on some sort of miracle weight lifting regime?

Mark Cuban: shawn is just one of those guys born to be skinny.. he works out a lot harder than people realize

Mark Cuban: I like the best of 7. it lets the best team win and gives us time to build excitement with the fans.

And i have proposed to the league to reseed the playoffs. So far they say no...but i will be persistent on this one

Mark Cuban: none, i learned from all of them. My biggest professional mistake was not fighting the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. Wont get to technical here, but it was the music industry killing internet music, and I thought it was such a bad, misguided law it would never last. I was wrong

I think its crazy when people think what a team does in the playoffs is the key to keeping or dismissing a coach. I would have to be pretty darn stupid to use that as a basis .

Concord, NC: Mark, I have one question, when the Hornets went to the owners to vote for approval on the move, I was especting more of a voice against it, mostly because nobody seems to like Shinn, even other owners. Shortly after, a new team was awarded. Without saying it in any certain terms, did Stern make it pretty clear that if everyone voted for the move a new team would be approved? It just seemed odd the overwhelming approval for a move from a city that in the past supported the team so much and fell due to ownership.

Mark Cuban: the vote wasnt about support or non support, there were very specific things they had us vote on. so there really wasnt anything we could do to stop them


Dallas, Tx: Hey Mark, Do you think players leaving college early is hurting the NBA? What about NCAA? Do you as NBA owners care about the welfare of the NCAA game for the future of the NBA? Thanks man! You are awesome!

Mark Cuban: I could care less about the welfare of the NCAA game. To me its incredibly hypocritical how they go about their business. They should allow players to declare "going to the NBA" as their major, and accept that as reality instead of trying to fool themselves.

If I was allowed to, i would go to a local college team, ask them to leave the NCAA and personally provide financial support for them to educate players, allow us to pay the players a stipend to help them out, and let the players see and know if they are qualified for the nba so they can make an educated, realistic decision on their future.

The NCAA has enabled an environment where agents come in and mislead kids into thinking they can play in the NBA, and then when they cant, the kids are stuck with no place to go and no way to pay to finish their education. Thats wrong, and the NCAA is completely responsible and they know it.

Mark Cuban: Reviewers watch films differently than the regular film goer. I loved the film. Everyone who has seen it in the tests liked it , some of the most entertaining movies i have seen have gotten bad reviews. We did the movie to entertain, not to get good reviews.

Anyway, I find it rather funny that owners, such as yourself, pay all this money to hire a head coach, who then hires his assistants, who have proven in the past that they can't do the job of winning, but get hired anyway JUST BECAUSE THEY WERE A HEAD COACH ONE OTHER TIME IN THE NBA. In most businesses once you have been fired or let go from a job that is similar in nature, you wouldn't expect to get hired by someone else to do that same job because you have a proven track record that is unsuccessful. Two questions: 1) Would you hire a head coach who has no nba or college experience, but has shown the ability to be successful at his occupation and has a desire to get into the coaching profession? 2) Would you hire someone who could prove to you that clock management is so poor in all professional sports, (that some schmuck, such as myself sitting at home watching the game), could manage the clock by using time-outs and quick shots to get your team an extra 2-3 possessions a game? And usually these possessions would be at the end of the game when games are won and lost!! I don't know if you will get this e-mail or not, but I would love to talk to an owner who loves winning as much as I and who hates losing as much as I.
