This Spring, you’re about to learn Biology in ways you never have before! The folks at Crash Course have let me bring my whole wacky personality to this project and it’s totally synergizing with theirs!

Ya’ll know I love science communication! Since I was a little kid, I always had to have an answer for people when they’d ask “eww, why do you want to study insects”? And I really started having fun with it but I didn’t think of explaining science stuff on YouTube until I saw the reach of the Vlog Bros Hank and John Green with their shows Crash Course and SciShow! Channels like there’s (and ASAP Science and Kurzgesagt) inspired the Doctor Buggs show! So, I was pretty excited to get an email last year with the subject line “How Would You Like to Host Crash Course Biology”! I’m sure you can guess my answer!

We’ve been filming tons of episodes on everything from parasites to biochem! And I dare you to try to fall asleep during one these lessons! It’s just not humanly possible!

Lavender Graduation! It’s the first of the 3 graduation ceremonies at which I’ll be celebrating in the coming days! This one recognizes LGBTQ+ students at the University of Maryland who have made a positive impact on campus life! Congrats to everyone recognized today and thanks so much to the coolest administrator on the planet who braved a monsoon to get here and give me an awesome gift! I’ve taken to calling her Bonus Mom; she’s always looking out for me on campus!! 😘

Oh And I could get used to this doctoral regalia! I know I look like I’m about to direct the choir😄 or like a wizard from Wakanda 🙅🏿‍♂️ but these are pretty sweet robes!!

Couldn’t have asked for a better colony to end the hunt! This colony is huge!! Sooooo much brood, pollen, and honey🍯😋 I’m expecting some really solid data from these babies! #สำเร็จ 🙌🏾#เสร็จแล้ว #MyBeeSuitIsTotallyThrowingOffTheWhiteBalance😂 #BlackBeekeeperProblems

Putting on that game face; getting ready to wrangle these wild bees! I’m glad I brought a second bee suit! P'Banky (a grad student friend from the lab) was going to help me do this in shorts! Short Shorts!! Let’s just say there are places from which I don’t want to help someone remove a stinger! 😐😆😩

Ok so we just made it to the mountain and we’re on our way to meet The Honey Hunters! They’ve found four Apis cerana (Asian Honey Bee) colonies and they’ll catch them for us for 1000 baht (about 30 USD!) ตื่นเต้นจังเลย😄 I feel like I should tip…I wonder how much it’s customary to tip a honey hunter. 🤔🤔

Hey there friend,
Have you ever wondered what your old pal Doctor Buggs has been researching for his thesis? What’s that? You say you only have 3 minutes? Well have I got the video for you!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dq52ug3HTxY

After winning the regional rounds, I’m representing the good ‘ole US of A in an International science competition in which we are judged on the impact of our thesis research and how well we’re able to explain it in just 3 minutes. Part of the of it involves a popular vote. Mine is called “The Curious Case of the Bee Mite’s Bite”. I hope you’ll give it a watch and make your way over to this page to vote!

Researchers from the San Diego Natural History Museum along with other experts recently unveiled a new spider species found in Mexico that is roughly the size of a softball, reports Deborah Sullivan Brennan at the Los Angeles Times.

According to a blog post from the museum, in 2013 field entomologist Jim Berrian and a team of researchers found the spider while exploring the Sierra Cacachilas, a small mountain range in Baja California Sur in Mexico. Investigating a cave in the area, they noticed a giant exoskeleton hanging from the ceiling.

Instead of running back to their hotel and hiding under the covers, they decided to return that night, since they identified the spider as belonging to a genus of arachnids that are often nocturnal. That night, in the darkened cave, the team got their first look at what is now known as Califorctenus cacachilensis, or the Sierra Cacachilas wandering spider. The official description of the new spider appears in the journal Zootaxa…
