Have you ever had this thought ⤵️ "If the science takes 2 hours to understand, I might be less willing to read it, skip over parts, or be tempted to find another paper altogether." It's tough, but true. To avoid that fate, MaKenna Cealie, BioRender's latest SciComm Champion, places a lot of value on figures and graphical abstracts in her neuroscience research. Her tips for engaging audiences with her research: 👩🔬 Focus on the figures and proactively learn design best practices 😮 Watch out for design pitfalls (overcrowding, unnecessary color, etc.) 🧠 Use compelling neuroscience visuals, no matter the audience Read all her tips in our latest blog post — link in the comments! And don't miss: + MaKenna's crochet blanket pattern that she created in BioRender! + Links to her templates (like the ethanol dosing protocol for neonatal mice, below)

Our new paper explores Opportunities and Obstacles in Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation. Non-invasive brain stimulation has incredible potential for treating and managing mental health and neurological disorders, but there are a number of key challenges to overcome. We discuss advances in ultrasonic, magnetic, electrical and optical brain stimulation. Each approach offers unique pros, cons and mechanisms of action. ⚡🧲 🔦 🔊 We discuss the major obstacles in this field including sources of variation, dose-response relationships, biases, sample sizes and more. Finally, we outline areas of opportunity including scalable methods of functional and structural brain imaging, considerations for different hair types, multimodal stimulation and approaches to the sample size problem. Huge thanks to my co-authors Danielle Kurtin, Méadhbh Brosnan and Mahnaz Arvaneh! Figures were created with BioRender and the link to the paper is in the comments⬇️

This International Women's Day, we're celebrating the many accomplished women who make up our user community and BioRender. 👩🏾🔬👩🏻🎓👩🏼🚀👩🏽🏫👩🏿💻 We kicked off today at our Toronto HQ with a special breakfast led by Megan Macaluso where we celebrated the women who inspire us, discussed how gender shows up in the workplace, and ways we can continue to be intentional about how we build an inclusive culture as we grow. And we’re proud to share that this isn't just a one-day focus for us. Did you know that women make up: • 2 of BioRender’s 3 co-founders (Shiz Aoki and Katya Shteyn!) • 53% of our team • 37% of leadership ...and this representation continues to grow! (P.S. We're hiring.) We also want to give a shout out to all of the women that help make up our user community, especially Amina Tucak-Smajić, Kristina Grozić, and Rosalba Lopez, whose high quality templates are fan favorites in the BioRender library. Thank you to all the women who have contributed to #BioRender — we wouldn't be the company we are today without you. Black History Month: Celebrating Black Achievement in STEM 🔬 🔭 🚀 💉 ... On Monday, the BioRender team gathered to celebrate Black History Month in our own special way: by honoring four Black individuals who have contributed to major achievements in science, technology, engineering, and math. Now you’re invited to join us in this celebration! Check out their amazing stories below, and let us know in the comments who else we should add to our list of influential Black figures in STEM 💭 ⤵ 👩🏾🌾 Henrietta Lacks: Henrietta was a tobacco farmer whose cancer cells, sampled without her consent or knowledge, were the first immortalized cell line (“HeLa cells”), which have since been used for countless scientific and commercial research purposes. Henrietta’s story was made into a book, which we’re adding to our reading list (see link in comments). 🚂 Elijah McCoy: Elijah, the first Black Canadian inventor, patented over 50 inventions including an “oil-drip-cup,” which served as a lubricant to help steam engines run smoother and faster. 🚀 Katherine Johnson: Katherine was one of the first African-American women to work as a NASA scientist. She was known as a "human computer,” and was the inspiration for the movie “Hidden Figures." (see link in comments) 🎂 William Peyton Hubbard: William was a baker who patented a successful commercial baker's oven, the Hubbard Portable, which was said to have been “fire-proof” at the time. Hubbard went on to serve as Toronto’s first Black councilor, and he led efforts to create the publicly-owned Toronto Hydro-Electric System. And a very hearty thanks to our very own Mayet Awoke and Leighton Wallace for running this special employee event. ❣️

"A figure speaks 1,000 words — if it works." We totally agree. Amina Tucak-Smajić gave us her take on why clear scientific figures make all the difference and chatted with BioRender about her work as a Senior Teaching and Research Assistant at the University of Sarajevo - Faculty of Pharmacy. Amina also shared: + What good design looks like (and why it matters) 🙌 + What's not so good 🙈 + How she uses scientific figures in her career 🔬 + ...and more! We want to hear: How has quality scientific communication helped in your career? Link to the full story in the comments
