Few women in the 20th century wielded more power and influence than did Josefine Lehnert (1894-1983). No woman, in twenty centuries, ever wielded more power and influence in the Vatican. When Josefine Lehnert entered Holy Cross Convent [Menzinger, Switzerland] she was given the name “Pascalina.” In 1917, the beautiful young nun from Bavaria and two other Sisters were sent to Munich to organize and maintain the nunciature. The Holy See’s newly appointed Nuncio to Bavaria was 41-year-old Eugenio Pacelli. For the rest his diplomatic career, Schwester Pascalina would remain his personal secretary, housekeeper and ne plus ultra confidante. When Pacelli was recalled to Rome in 1929 and subsequently made a cardinal and appointed Secretary of State, he requested that Sister Pascalina be permitted to continue working with him. She was the first woman ever to reside in the Apostolic Palace. In 1939, on the first ballot and by a unanimous [minus one] vote, Eugenio Pacelli became the world’s 260th Pope; the twelfth to take the name “Pius.”Romanità —an unofficial yet rigorous ecclesiastical/Italianate protocol that permeates diplomacy to this day— saw fit to “promote” the new pontiff’s secretary. Henceforth, “Sister” Pascalina was “Mother” Pascalina. Strong woman that she was, “La Madre” was keenly and constantly aware of the tightrope she was walking —and more so of the snake pit just below it. As the pope’s closest confidante, she strove for anonymity; kept any opinion she might have had on any matter, private or public, strictly to herself; avoided photographers and journalists like the plague and —perhaps most challengingly of all— ignored every cruel rumor and innuendo, never dignifying one of them with a response.Undoubtedly, Pope Pius XII was a giant among men; an outstanding intellectual; a savior to countless victims of World War II; a courageous advocate for the voiceless; a born leader who understood a complicated world and its leaders, good and evil; a Pope worthy to be called “Great”.It is said that “Behind ever great man is a great woman.” The history of Pope Pius XII and Mother Pascalina requires one very important word change to that maxim: “Beside every great man stands a great woman.”

A warm-hearted and brave book!!
Father Charles Theodore Murr writes a warm and engaging story of a remarkable friendship between a young seminarian and later, as a fervent priest, with a great woman and Religious Sister, Madre Pascalina. She was a strong person who had served with courage and saving help to the Jews and others in need during WWII against the ravages of the Nazis, and continued a life of practical charity to the most needy for the rest of her life. Madre Pascalina knew first hand the greatness, wisdom and compassion of Pope Pius XII and his remarkable holiness, a man who was a champion for peace and goodness ..and so acknowledged by his own immediate contemporaries. Father Charles, the author, shares Madre Pascalina's amazing Vatican and Pope Pius XII stories with us. The book also allows the reader to see the value of spiritual friendship and how it beautifully unfolded as they became a viable and heart-bonding part of each other's lives. The illustrationsof Enrique J. Aquilar bring and intimate and creative life to the book. Finally...the book sheds light on the shocking internal battles of the Catholic Church ....and the hidden Freemasonry elements of destruction at work within it ...which expands the book's subject matter to a very brave revelation on the part of Father Charles, and relates a grave concern for the sincere and faithful members of the universal, Catholic Church. I wanted to read more !! Bravo!!!

This book is an absolute must read!! It took me under a day to read through it. Clear, accessible--and this is no small feat given the fact that there are references to Latin, Italian and German sprinkled throughout the book! The author provides English translations most of the time so that is helpful to readers who do not know these languages.

In this book, Madre Pascalina offers a wide range of holy advice about life (physical and spiritual) and the state of the Church. It is beautiful, in-depth material that is simply excellent and necessary for Catholics today. There is also much wit and humor that will have the reader busting at the seams! The reason, for example, why the cause for Pius IX's canonization was stalled will leave you stitches.

I walk away from this book with a much better appreciation for Madre Pascalina as a powerful woman who "knew where the bodies were buried." She also, however, knew what sanctity meant. In an age where scandals are proclaimed from the rooftops by self-proclaimed 'news' outlets, it is refreshing to see someone who knows the place and value of discretion but who, nevertheless, knew people and events for what they were.

Pick up a copy of this book and be blessed with the rare perspective of someone who was in a position to know. You will not regret it!

Hard to put the book down! Delightful! I felt like I was allowed into the close and Christ-like friendship of Charlie, later Father Murr and the Catholic woman who God placed in such a unique role in our Church’s History. They both are deeply faithful Catholics; savvy and saintly! I know I’ll read it again! Thank you, Fr Murr for sharing the truth about things with us.

Feeling disappointed in present church restrictions, I just happened to turn on Catholic Radio to hear Fr. Charles (Don Carlo) Murr talk about his book...I was so intrigued I pulled the car over to write the information down...then I researched and bought the book...Always loved Pope Pius XII...I have a relic that was my grandmother's... Mother Pasqualina's stories of him brought him closer to me adopting him as my saint to watch over me this year...thank you for the history and intrigue of the characters good and bad who have saved us from the evil trying to infiltrate our beloved church...we still need so many prayers for Her...thank you Fr. Murr...God's Blessings always...you write with clarity for my understanding....don't have to be a cleric or scholar...love, love the ending of our Beloved Bishop Sheen...wise wise words...

This is a book about awareness, fortitude and forgiveness, inspired by a truly modern day woman, the holy Madre Pascalina. It is a touching memoir about a true and lasting friendship between a young Charles Murr, author, and Sister M. Pascalina Lehnert, a German Roman Catholic nun who served as Pope Pius XII's housekeeper and secretary from 1917 until his death as pope in 1958. It is driven by their mutual love for Pious XII. One learns about the heroic and often hidden wartime efforts made by Pious XII as well as the delicate balancing act required to save tens of thousands of Jews and Catholics during the Nazi occupation of Rome.

Their friendship was invaluable during Murr's early years of formation and into his priesthood. Murr opens our eyes to the inner workings of the Church, for better of worse. The politics among the Vatican elite--those who are supposed to tend their sheep-- can be disturbing to read about, yet important to be aware of.

Murr closes the book with a remarkable sermon by Bishop Fulton Sheen and an uplifting appendix to inspire the faithful not to lose hope and to be ready for the mounting task ahead.

One of the best books I have ever read. The author is able to portray the humour and the secrets that Madre Pascalina held in her heart as vividly as if one was sitting in the room. Deserves 5 stars or more. Led me to delve more into Pope Pius XII reign as all is not as it seems on how this man has been painted. Excellent!!
