The surfer who died last week at Guadalupe Beach — possibly due to a cardiac arrest — was Joseph Nunes, 72, of Santa Maria, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau.

The incident occurred at about 9:20 a.m. Nov. 11 on the beach west of Guadalupe.

An unconscious Nunes was pulled from the water by others at the beach, who immediately began performing CPR, which was followed by advanced lift support by firefighters and emergency medical services personnel, according to Capt. Scott Safechuck of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

Despite their efforts, Nunes was pronounced dead at the scene, Safechuck said.

Among the agencies responding to the incident were the Guadalupe and county fire departments, along with the Sheriff’s Office, AMR, and State Parks.

Information on the cause of death was not released.
