“Muddy buddies” (a.k.a. puppy chow) is the name for a homemade candy or snack that’s main ingredients include cereal, chocolate, peanut butter, and powdered sugar. General Mills sells their own version of the popular treat, but making it at home is a fun and easy activity for all ages. 

How to Make Homemade Muddy Buddies

Here’s a brief overview of what you can expect when you make this muddy buddies recipe: 

  1. Microwave the chocolate and peanut butter together, then stir in the vanilla. 
  2. Pour the mixture over the cereal and toss until it’s completely coated. 
  3. Transfer to a bag with powdered sugar and shake to coat.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups Rice Chex cereal

  • 3 cups Corn Chex cereal

  • 3 cups Chocolate Chex cereal

  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

  • ½ cup peanut butter

  • ¼ cup butter or margarine

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar

Directions

  1. Combine all cereals in a large bowl; set aside.

  2. Place chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter in a 1-quart microwave-safe bowl. Microwave, uncovered, on high for 1 minute, then stir. Continue warming mixture until smooth and combined, about 30 seconds longer. Stir in vanilla.

  3. Pour chocolate mixture over cereal and stir until evenly coated. Transfer to a 2-gallon resealable plastic bag.

  4. Add powdered sugar to the bag and seal; shake until well-coated. Evenly spread cereal out onto waxed paper to cool.
