Kangna Ranaut has that air. She could go to the darkest corner of the room and pretend she wasn’t there but chances are that all eyes will be drawn to her, anyway. She has a wild child persona and that is something neither success nor stability has been able to shake off. And it’s this very persona that the world is intrigued by.  In this interview, the actress cocks a snook at all those colourful controversies surrounding her.

Q Has the success of Tanu Weds Manu (TWM) changed people’s perceptions about you as an actor?

Kangna Ranaut

A Yes I was. I always believed in the  film, right from day one. I was the one who initiated a lot of things. In fact, when Rajkumar Hirani saw the first copy, he liked it a lot. It’s not like just one Friday decided this for us. The music too became a rage overnight. It’s like the beginning of a new era. I was always asked why I kept playing the same type of ‘serious’ characters after Gangster. The truth is that I was never offered interesting roles until recently; I didn’t have any options. Of course, those roles made me who I am today. I made a lot of money, won awards, gained respect. But as a performer, it wasn’t fulfilling.

iDiva Team

Q TWM has been fulfilling. Were you expecting this success?

Kangna Ranaut

A I was expecting this kind of success, for sure.

iDiva Team

Q But many found your diction and dialogue delivery a bit screechy.

Kangna Ranaut

A Tanu is a girl from the North and she is my age. My director, Aanandji (Aanand Rai) asked me to be myself. In Gangster, no one had a problem with my voice and diction. The role was such. I’ve worked hard on my diction (for TWM).

iDiva Team

Q Reportedly, you belong to a royal family. How come you never spoke about it all this while?

Kangna Ranaut

A My ancestors are Rajputs from Jaipur, a lineage of the royal family. Later, one of my ancestors settled in Himachal. When I left my home to become an actress, my father didn’t give me a single penny. I struggled a lot and they had no idea what I went through. My grandfather even asked me to drop my surname when he learnt I was joining films. But then I told them to shut up as I was born with the surname. Today, I have everything one can imagine and there is nothing I want from them, although I do a lot for my family and friends today.

iDiva Team

Q Do you get upset about the constant media reportage about you?

Kangna Ranaut

A The media loves me and how! I have become the flavour of the season. Every actress goes through this. It’s unfortunate. But they will have to live with me for lots and lots of years as my season is not going to end. So, be prepared for many such stories on me.

iDiva Team

Q Is it tough for a woman to make it big in this male-driven industry?

Kangna Ranaut

A No. I don’t think so. This industry gives you a lot of freedom, unlike any other. Here, you can do what you want, be who you are, wear what you want, say what you like and do what you like with your money. I don’t know why people are so scared of sending their girls to this industry. Like my parents were so skeptical.

iDiva Team

Q You’ve been accused of namedropping… especially the heroes.

Kangna Ranaut

A First, they write Kangna is having an affair with co-stars! I clarify that rumour saying they are my friends. Next thing I know is that I’m using their names and calling them my friends! Then I say, they’re not my friends and they don’t mean anything to me. Then they go on to say, ‘Kangna said that they are not her friends! Are they her enemies?’ Then I say they’re nobody to me… and it goes on. So, what am I supposed to call them, my friends or my enemies? The truth is, once I go back home, it doesn’t matter to me what Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt or Salman Khan do. Maen apne ghar mein khush hoon, woh apne ghar mein. Mujhe unse kya lena dena, yaar? But when I am on set, it does matter to me how Ajay’s mood is and I do make sure that everyone is calm and happy. If I’m having a coffee I invite them to have one as well. That’s all!

iDiva Team

Q You were once a regular at Salman’s house parties. But suddenly there was a cooling off. Why?

Kangna Ranaut

A When a girl is often seen with Salman, tongues wag. But believe me, we are just good friends. We do meet a lot when both of us are free. We were to do a film together last August. But two days before the schedule, the film got canned. Mahesh sir (Manjrekar), Salim uncle (Khan), Salman and I used to meet regularly for discussions. That’s the time when I was seen a lot at his house. But after the project got delayed, I got busy with my own work.

iDiva Team

Q How is your personal life looking at this moment?

Kangna Ranaut

A Very good. Lot of success, lots of movie offers and a lot of male attention as well (laughs). I think that comes as a package. But I’m going to take my time. I may get into a relationship soon but I am in no hurry (smiles).

iDiva Team

Q What kind of a man would suit an independent girl like you?

Kangna Ranaut

A My man has to be more intelligent than I am, which is difficult to find. He should definitely be more successful than me, which is not so difficult to find. I’d be a fool to expect a better looking man than me, which is impossible to find (laughs). However, I don’t think I’ll come across a man who’s as successful as I am at 23.

iDiva Team

Q What about love at first sight?

Kangna Ranaut

A Yes, that’s one thing which happens to me. But it never takes off from there. I cannot approach someone, I lack the confidence when it comes to the guy I desire. I’m very good when it comes to matchmaking and hooking others up. But I can’t help my own cause.

iDiva Team

Q Do you regret knowing Aditya Pancholi?

Kangna Ranaut

A No, why? In fact, he has been really nice to me. There was a phase where a few ugly things happened but it was more because of the bad people around. He’s not a bad person. He’s misunderstood.

iDiva Team

Q How do you handle men who hit on you?

Kangna Ranaut

A Men keep hitting on me and it’s only natural for someone to be attracted or infatuated to someone like me (winks). I’m comfortable and know how to deal with them; I don’t need to keep them away.
