'Dumb' girl Kangna is a knock out
She may be a national award winner, but Bollywood actress Kangna Ranaut seems keen to swap her rather intense on-screen image with a playful one.
On Saturday morning, at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards 2010 in Colombo, Kangna was in a jovial mood, joking during an impromptu chat with select newspersons.
It all started when she was asked about several Bollywood celebrities not turning up at IIFA Colombo owing to political reasons. "I have no idea about these things. Call me the film industry's dumb blonde if you wish, except that I am not blonde," she said.
Kangna, who has established a serious image often bordering on the loony, now wants to ooze largerthan-life glamour. She made as much evident earlier in the day at the launch of her upcoming film, the Sanjay Dutt-Irrfan Khan starrer Knock Out, in which she plays a crime journalist. The promos of the film were released at the event.
When it was pointed out that female crime reporters hardly ever dressed in minis and heels while on the field, she retorted: "Films needn't mirror reality completely. The director (Mani Shankar) and I had a chat on this issue and we decided a little bit of glamour would be fine for the screen. I know five-inch heels are bad for a girl's frame - yoga tells me that. But if I were a guy, I'd certainly run after you chicks if you dressed that way to work, no matter how hectic your schedule is. You don't have to flaunt a Mass-com certificate before the camera to do a convincing job as a screen journalist," she said, addressing the female TV reporters in the conference hall.
On screen, too, Kangna wants to turn playful. "I have signed Anees Bazmee's No Problem because I wanted to do an all-out comedy," she said.
"It has never been a conscious decision on my part to do intense roles. Unfortunately, you have limited options in this industry. As an actor, all I can do is understand the psychology of the character, her age, nature and social backdrop before giving it a shot. In Knock Out, may be my character has to rush to the field to cover a crime immediately after hosting a crime show for which she had to be dolled up."
The promos of Knock Out seemed to suggest the film is a rip-off from the Hollywood hit, Phone Booth , with Irrfan playing Colin Farrell's character and Sanjay Dutt being cast in Keifer Sutherland's role of the hidden sniper psycho. Shankar, however, claimed his was an original film. "It's a totally new screenplay about a man who takes on the system in his own way," he insisted at the press conference.
Knock Out, opening in September, also marks the screen debut of filmmaker Apoorva Lakhia as an actor in a cameo.
