BANGALORE: The cabinet has decided to extend the mid-day meal scheme to high school students — those studying in eighth, ninth and tenth standards.
Primary and secondary education minister Basavaraj S Horatti on Monday said the extended scheme will benefit an additional 18 lakh students.
According to official estimates, 3,574 government, 2,800 aided and 5,500 upgraded higher primary schools (only 8th standard) will now be covered under the scheme.

Public instruction commissioner Madan Gopal told TOI that Karnataka was among a few states to have approved the extended scheme. While the Centre had directed state governments to extend the scheme to high schools in educationally backward areas, Karnataka has gone a step further to extend the scheme to all government and aided schools irrespective of the area, he said.
