MISCELLANEOUS INSCRIPTIONS IN KANNADA

No. 73.

(A. R. No. 55-A of 1904.)

ON A SLAB SET UP IN FRONT OF THE DURGESVARI TEMPLE AT KUDATINI, BELLARY TALUK, BELLARY DISTRICT.

This is damaged and dated Saks 897, Yuva, [punna]me, Sukravara, corresponding probably to A.D. 976 February 18 Friday.  It refers itself to the reign of the Chlukya king Ahavamalladeva (Taila II), who is stated to have made a grant of land for the service of Bhairavadeva and another god (name lost) in the presence of Dandasani Gadadhara-rahmacharin, the five Vargas and Hampana-Bhattoadhyaya.  The Brahmacharin is stated to have been the chief of the [Karttikeya]-tapovana.

ON A SLAB LYING NEAR THE ANJANEYA TEMPLE AT KANCHAGARA-BELAGALLU, ALUR TALUK, SAME DISTRICT.

This is dated Saka 903, Vikrama, Vaisakha, su. 5, Brihaspativara corresponding to A.D. 981, April 22 Thursday and refers itself to the reign of the Chalukya king Ahavamalladeva, who is said here to have confirmed the old sthana-manya to the three Siva temples of Kanchagara-Belgali.  Revaladevi, the queen of Vira-Nolamba-Pallava-Permanadideva, who bore the title ‘Lord of Kanchi,’ is also said to have granted 6 mattars of land to the god Kalapri(ri)yadeva and the two (temples of) Vishnudeva.

ON THE THIRD SLAB SET UP ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE KALLESVARA TEMPLE AT BAGALI, HARAPANAHALLI TALUK, SAME DISTRICT.

This is dated Saka 909, Sarvajit, Vaisakha, su. 3, Adityavara corresponding to A.D. 987 April 3, Sunday, the tithi being current for about 4 hours on the next day.  It refers itself to the reign of the Chalukya king Ahavamalladeva and states that while his Mahasamanta Aytavarma was ruling Kisukalu (du) seventy and Kogali five-hundred, the fifty (Mahajanas) of Balguli made a gift of a garden for the service of the god Adityadeva consecrated by Duggimayya.

ON THE 17TH SLAB SET UP ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE SAME TEMPLE

This is dated Saka 913, Khara, Magha, su. 5, Mangalvara, corresponding to A.D. 991 January 12 Tuesday and states that, at the five-hundred, the Chalukya king Ahavamalladeva confirmed the toll contribution on betle leaves formrly fixed by the illustrious Kannaradeva (of the Rashtrakuta family).  Adityavarmarasa is said to have been ruling Kogali five-hundred.  The fifty and the thousand are also said to have made a gift of some tolls to a certain Barik-Echa.  Chandoja engraved this.

ON A SLAB SET UP TO THE EAST OF THE MANDAPA IN FRONT OF THE BASTI AT KOGALI, HADAGALLI TALUK, SAME DISTRICT.

This is dated Saka 914, Nandana, Pushya, ba. 12, Sukravara, Uttarayana-samkranti corresponding to A.D. 992 December 23 Friday and belongs to the reign of the Chalukya king Ahavamalladeva who was ruling from Rodda.  His feudatory Adityavarmarasa of the Kadamba family, which was noted for ten horse sacrifices, was ruling Kogali five-hundred and Sundavatti twelve.  The king is stated to have granted manya lands to the Brahmans, Settis, Gavundas and the five Mathas headed by the sthanadhipati Ganadharadeva and fixed the rate of taxes payable on other lands.  It also specifies the fines to be imposed on those who violate customs or commit adultery and other offences.  The nose of the woman guilty of adultery is to be cut off and the adulterer put to death.  A theif also is to be put to death.  Causing wounds and blood by beating is punished by a fine of 8 panas.  The Mahajanas, the Gavundas and the five Mathas are exempted from bitti (compulsory labour) in the king’s service.

ON A BROKEN SLAB LYING IN THE MANDAPA OF THE KUMARASVAMI TEMPLE AT KUDATINI, BELLARY TALUK, SAME DISTRICT.

The record is damaged and dated Saka 918, Durmukhi, Sravana, su. 5 . . . spativara corresponding to A.D. 996, July 23 Thursday and refers itself to the reign of the Chalukya king Ahavamalladeva (Taila II).  It records the grant of a garden in the presence of the chief of the [Karttikeya]-tapovana and the five Vargas of the village Kotti[tone].

(A. R. No. 722 of 1922.)

ON A GRAGMENT OF A SLAB LYING IN FRONT OF THE SIVA TEMPLE AT GONAHALU, NEAR HAMPADEVANAHALLI, HOSPET TALUK, SAME DISTRICT.

This is damaged and dated Saka 93[6], Sravana . . . . . . in the reign of the Chalukya king Viramadityadeva (V) and mentions Iriva-Nolambadhiraja and his queen.  The god Mahakaladeva of Pampa is also mentioned.

No. 80.

(A. R. No. 87 of 1904.)

ON THE 3RD SLAB SET UP IN THE MANDAPA IN FRONT OF THE NARASIMHASVAMI SHRINE IN THE KALLESVARA TEMPLE AT BAGALI, HARAPANAHALLI TALUK, SAME DISTRICT.

This is dated Saka 940, Kalayukta, Pushya, su. 13, Adityavara, Uttarayana-sankranti, Vyatipata.  The details correspond to A.D. 1018 December 23 Tuesday, not Sunday, Uttarayana-sankranti having occurred on the 24th.  It belongs to the reign of the Chalukya king Jagadekamalla-Jayasinghadeva (II), whose feudatory Jagadekamalla-Nolambapallava-Permanadi alias Udayadityadeva is stated to have been ruling over Gangavadi ninety-six-thousand, Kadambalike thousand, Kogali five-hundred, five villages of Masiyavadi hundred-and-forty, Ballakunde three-hundred and Kudihara seventy, in Edadore two-thousand.  It records that, under the orders of Udayaditya, the Pergade Narasinghayya went to Balguli and, washing the feet of Somasingha-Bhalara in the presence of the Mahajanas of Balguli, Bikki, the Manneya of Bikiga seventy and Birabhatta, made a grant of some plots of land for offerings to the god Kalidevasvami, for the maintenance of the Devadasis and their band, for servants and for the feeding of teachers and students.  Narasinghayya is praised for his bravery.  The gift was made on the occasion of Udayaditya’s visit to the tirtha of Pampapura.  The king is stated to have been ruling from Kampuli.

ON THE 6TH SLAB SET UP ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE SAME TEMPLE.

The contents of the record are the same as those of No. 80.

ON A SLAB SET UP IN THE TANK-BED IN HIREMAGALAGERI, SAME TALUK AND DISTRICT.

This is damaged and dated Saka 943, Durmati ( == A.D. 1021-22) with no other details, in the reign of the Chalukya king Jagadekamalladeva (Jayasimha II).  It records that the Dandanayaka Polalamayya made to Brahmarasi-Jiya a grant of some land (?).  Below this are recorded two more grants.  The first registers a gift made to Chandrabharana-Jiya when Jagadekamalla-Nolambapallava . . . . . .  was governing Ballakunde three-hundred and Kudiharavi seventy in Saka year 955, Srimukha.  The secodn registers a gift by Brahmadiraja to god Svayambhudeva in Saka 956, Bhava.

(A. R. No. 490 of 1914.)

ON A PILLAR LYING NEAR THE UDUCHALAVVA TEMPLE AT KATTEBENNUR, KADAGALLI TALUK, SAME DISTRICT.

This is damaged and dated Saka 947, Krodhana, Marggasira, [amavasya]. . . . surya-grahana corresponding probably to A.D. 1025 November 23, Tuesday, the month being evidently a Purnimanta one.  It refers itself to the reign of the Chalukya king Jagadekamalladeva (Jayasimha II) and mentions Maduvarmmadeva who was governing Bennevura twelve and the Manneya Mallapa.

ON A SLAB CLOSE TO THE CHAVADI AT KALKAMBHA, BELLARY TALUK, SAME DISTRICT.

This is damaged and dated Saka 952, Pramo[duta], Chaitra, su. 5, Brihaspativara, corresponding to A.D. 1030 March 12, Thursday.   It refers itself to the reign of the chief Jagadekamalla-Nolamba-[Per[manadi and mentions some dharma-pratishtha.

No. 85.

ON A SLAB SET UP NEAR THE HARIHARASVAMI TEMPLE AT TELIGI, HARAPANAHALLI TALUK, SAME DISTRICT.

This is damaged and dated Saka 952, Pramoduta ( = A.D. 1032), Uttarayana-sankranti.  The date is not verifiable.  It refers itself to the reign of the Chalukya king, Jagadekamalla-Jayasinghadeva (II), and mentions his feudatory Jagadekamalla-Nolamba-Pallava-Permanadi as ruling over Nolambavadi thirty-two thousnd, Kadambalike thousnd, Kogali five-hundred, Ballakunde three-hundred, Kandiparavi seventy and Karividi thirty.  Kannimayya, the Urodeya of Telagi, is started to have made a gift of some wet land to Karigoda (gauda) in the preesence of the god Sankharanarayanadeva of Kudalur.

ON A SLAB SET UP NEAR THE BHAGYESVARA TEMPLE AT TALAVAGALU, SAME TALUK AND DISTRICT.

This is dated the cyclic year Srimukha, Chaitra, su. 8 So.i.e., Somavara corresponding probably to A.D. 1093 March 7 Monday; f.d.t. .58.  The chief priest of the Bhogesvara temple at Talavagilu having died, Chikka-Gauda, son of SenaGauda and his uncle Nema-Gauda, along with the sixty families and the 12 Hittus, installed Pujari Nagayya in the place.[1]

ON THE SAME SLAB.

This is dated Saka 956, Bhava, Paushya, su. 1[2*], Budhavara, Uttarayana-sankranti corresponding to A.D. 1034 December 2 Wednesday.  It refers itself to the reign of Chalukya king Jagadekamalladeva and mentions his feudatory Jagadekamalla-Udayadityadeva, “lord of Kanchi,” ruling over Nolambavadi thirty-two-thousand, Kadambalige-thousand, [Kogali] five-hundred, Ballakunde three-hundred, Kudiharage seventy and Karividi thirty.  It records that Udayadityadeva made gifts of some plots of land for the service of the god Bhogesvaradeva of Talavage and for the maintenance of the worshippers, the musicians and the stone masons.

No. 88.

(A. R. No. 518 of 1914.)

ON A SLAB SET UP IN THE AJNANEYA TEMPLE AT CHIMNAHALLI, HADAGALLI TALUK, SAME DISTRICT.

This is a little damaged and dated Saka 956, Sukla, Pushya, su. 5, Adivara, Uttarayana-sankranti.  The date is irregular.  Saka 956, which is clear on the impression, was Bhava == A.D. 1034-35.  The record refers itself to the reign of the Chalukya king Jagadekamalladeva and mentions his feudatory Jagadekamalla-Nolambathree-hundred, Kudiharadi seventry and Karividi thirty.  It records that the Manevergade Ketaya-Nayaka, ruling over Nelkudure, made a grant of some plots of land and some contributon of grains per year for the service of the god Kalideva.  The  characters of the record are of a period much later than the one to which it purports to belong.
