Belur to be proposed as World Heritage site

HASSAN, JULY 24. A plan to promote Hassan as an all-weather tourist destination in South Asia may change the face of tourism in the State.

The Government has decided to send a proposal to UNESCO to declare the famous Hoysala monuments of Belur and Halebeed and monolithic statue of Gomateshwara at Shravanabelagola as World Heritage sites.

Speaking to presspersons here on Friday, the Minister for Public Works and Energy, H.D. Revanna, said that he had discussed the issue with the Commissioner for Tourism and the Chief Secretary of the State. According to the sources in the Department of Tourism, 24 monuments in the country have been declared as World Heritage sites by UNESCO, including Hampi and Pattadkal in the State. The Department of Culture, the Archaeological Survey of India, and the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) would send a proposal to UNESCO after preparing a detailed report.

Tourism complex

Mr. Revanna said that the Government was keen on promoting tourism in the district.The Government was also planning to establish a tourism complex on National Highway 48, near Hassan.

The Deputy Commissioner had been instructed to identify 50 acres adjacent to the highway for the purpose, he added. The KSTDC had also been directed to introduce a Volvo bus to take tourists to visit Belur, Halebeed and Shravanabelagola on a daily basis, he said.

The Assistant Director of Tourism, Aadilakshmi, said that a proposal had been sent to the Government for recommending UNESCO.
