Border row: Government told to find permanent solution

Special Correspondent

`It should explore possibilities outside the Mahajan Commission'

  • Belgaum session failed to address problems of north Karnataka districts, says samiti
  • Samiti to organise a cultural function on November 1

GULBARGA: The Hyderabad-Karnataka Yuva Horata Samiti on Thursday said the State Government should explore the possibility of a permanent solution to the border dispute with Maharashtra, even if it was outside the Mahajan Commission recommendations, and agree to give away Belgaum to Maharashtra provided Solapur and other Kannada speaking-areas such as Akkalkot and Dhudhini were transferred to Karnataka.

President of the Samiti Raju Kulageri said the border dispute was being unnecessarily politicised by vested interests .

Dr. Kulageri said although the border dispute was an emotional issue, the ground realities should be considered. Referring to the legislature session in Belgaum and the proposal to hold such sessions there in the future, he said merely holding Assembly sessions in Belgaum would not solve the border dispute. He said the Belgaum session failed to address the problems faced by north Karnataka districts and no issue pertaining to the long-pending demands of the Hyderabad-Karnataka region such as the amendment to Article 371 of the Constitution, implementation of the recommendations of the High Power Committee for Redressal of Regional Imbalance and other issues had not been discussed during the session.

Dr. Kulageri said if the State Government really was interested in the development of backward regions such as Hyderabad-Karnataka, it should have held the Assembly session in Gulbarga instead of Belgaum.

Reiterating the demand of the samiti for a separate Statehood for the Hyderabad-Karnataka region, Dr. Kulageri said that was the only answer to the neglect of the region by successive Governments.

He said the samiti would organise cultural and sports meets as part of its demand for a separate Statehood for Hyderabad-Karnataka in October.

On November 1, the samiti would organise a unique cultural function to mark the demand for the separate Statehood in Gulbarga city.

On October 5, the samiti would convene a meeting of sportspersons and coaches of the region in Gulbarga city to finalise sports events to be organised in October.
