TN software exports clock 32 pc growth

Software exports from Tamil Nadu increased to Rs 14,115 crore during 2005-06, a 32 per cent increase over the Rs 10,730-crore in the previous year, according to the Software Technology Parks of India (Chennai).

About 19,000 employees entered the software industry in the State during 2005-06 to take the total in the industry to 1,18,710.

The top 10 software exporting units from the State were Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, HCL Technologies, Cognizant, Wipro, Satyam Computer, Scope International, Sutherland Global, Siemens Information and Teledata (STP division), STPI Chennai said.

Operating units, revenue

In Tamil Nadu, 161 STPI units were approved during 2005-06 compared to 103 in 2004-05. Some of the major new units last fiscal were Customer Operational Services, Spheris India and Hewlett Packard Globalsoft, STPI Chennai said.

The total operating software units reporting to STPI Chennai increased to 936 (754).

Revenue from application software and system software was Rs 9,514 crore (Rs 7,820 crore), IT-enabled services Rs 1,617 crore (Rs 1,636 crore), communication software, VLSI design and Web solution Rs 1,094 crore (Rs 932 crore), product package Rs 474 crore (Rs 341 crore) and consultancy Rs 831 crore (comparative number was not available), it said.

Exports from South

Software exports from the three southern States of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh was more than Rs 64,000 crore for fiscal 2005-06.

Karnataka logged in a software export growth of 36 per cent to touch Rs 37,600 crore for 2005-06 from Rs 27,600 crore during the last fiscal. Tamil Nadu's contribution during the fiscal was Rs 14,115 crore (Rs 10,730 crore) and Andhra Pradesh touched Rs 12,521 crore (Rs 8,270 crore), according to numbers released by respective STPI centres.
