Velodrome to come up soon near Bijapur city

Staff Correspondent

‘15 posts of Assistant Director of Sports vacant’

A Rs. 40-lakh cycling track laid at Ambedkar Stadium

Bijapur: The district is well-known for its cyclists, who have brought many laurels to the State as well as the country, at national and international competitions, Sports and Youth Services Minister Gulihatti Shekhar has said.

Speaking after inaugurating a State-level floodlit football tournament, organised by the District Football Association here on Saturday evening, he felt it was good to organise big sporting events such as these, especially when funding was a major problem.

Speaking on various demands of cyclists in the district, Mr. Shekhar said steps had been taken to construct an international-level velodrome near Bhutnal tank, 8 km from Bijapur city. The foundation stone for the velodrome would be laid on May 30 and it would be built at a cost of Rs. 3.5 crore.

“In recognition of the talent of cyclists in the district, the State Government has already laid a cycling track at the B.R. Ambedkar Stadium here, spending Rs. 40 lakh. The construction of an indoor stadium in the district is under way and it will be dedicated to sportspersons shortly. Such infrastructural support will boost the morale of sportspersons,” he said.

Addressing journalists after the inaugural function, Mr. Shekhar said there were 15 posts of Assistant Director, Youth Services and Sports, vacant in the State Government.

The Karnataka Public Service Commission had been asked to kick-start recruitment in this regard.

He admitted that the salaries paid to coaches in the State was less compared to those paid by the Sports Authority of India, and added that steps would be taken to resolve the issue.

Appasaheb Pattanshetty, S.K. Bellubbi and Vittal Katakdond, — all MLAs were present on the occasion.
