SRIVILLIPUTTUR : The annual car festival of Sri Andal Temple at Srivilliputtur in Virudhunagar district, organised as part of the ongoing Aadi Pooram festival, attracted hundreds of devotees from various districts on Saturday. The Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, KR. Periyakaruppan, and the Health Minister, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, inaugurated the car procession. This event is the highlight of the 12-day `Aadi Pooram' festival at the temple, one of the 108 holy places for Vaishnavites, that began with flag hoisting on July 21. After early morning special pujas, the presiding deities, Sri Rengamannar and Goddess Andal, were brought in decorated palanquins to the car. Hundreds of devotees, who had thronged the town, waited for their turn in a serpentine queue to have `darshan' of the deities on the car. Later, car began its journey around the temple at 8.30 a.m. in which the District Collector, S.S. Jawahar, and the Superintendent of Police, T. Senthil Kumar, participated. Devotees recited `Azhwar pasurams' as the car wended its way through the four Car Streets. The participation of the devotees ensured that the car reached its base before noon. A cloudy sky and intermittent drizzles provided an ideal setting for the event.
