Mangalore: Tulu Enters Schools as a Language of Study

Mangalore: Tulu Enters Schools as a Language of Study
Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Mar 27: Friday, March 27 turned to be a historic day for Tulu language and the Tuluvas. On this day, the state government issued an order, permitting Tulu to be taught as a third language in schools located in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. A long-drawn action, followed by persistent persuasion through persons in important positions, has made this possible, even though the decision was long overdue.

Organizations and activists had been pleading with the concerned, to introduce Tulu, which had been listed by Unesco as among the languages on the verge of extinction, although it seemed to be a little exaggerated and hence was received by the people here with skepticism. It is true that with modernization and large scale migration of the people from this part of the state to Mumbai and the Gulf, and also because of the fact that the coastal districts of late, are flooded with workers speaking different languages, Tulu had been showing signs of losing  some of its importance and sheen. Tulu Sahitya Academy and its members, had been steadfastly following up with the government to introduce Tulu as a language of study in schools, since the last several years.

Thorugh an order passed on Friday, under secretary in the department of education, M N Somashekhar, has ordered for the introduction of Tulu as a language of study in schools in the twin-districts commencing from the academic year 2010-11, and for preparing the syllabus and text book for the same. Kannada script will be used to teach this language.

Tulu Sahitya Academy has already submitted the draft of the Tulu text book and submitted the same to the department of educational research and training, said Uday Dharmasthala, member of Tulu Sahitya Academy. It is learnt that understanding the genuineness of giving encouragement to Tulu, which is a rich and beautiful language, the script of which is not in use and has been confined only to researchers so far, the government has finally decided to give its nod to start teaching it in schools. Uday has thanked home minister, Dr V S Acharya, Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister, Krishna J Palemar, primary education minister, Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, besides the Chief Minister for this decision.

The government and private schools in the two districts have already conveyed their willingness to teach Tulu, to the department of state educational research and training. It may be recalled, that Basel Mission had started teaching Tulu as a language in the schools in 1892 itself, when the British were ruling the country. However, after independence, Tulu seemed to be losing favour with those in decision making positions.

splendid instead of making tulu an optional language, students must be given an option to choose tulu over kannada, and it would make sense to teach tulu in the original script(grantha).
I'm certain students will choose tulu over kannada because tulu is very easy and enjoyable to learn unlike kannada,i have lived in karnataka for 26 years ,still can't speak fluent kannada :0
At last Tulu is getting the dues it deserves

Jai tulu nadu...long live tulu

Tulu is rich and scholarly Language. It is more effective communication among Taulavas.
in Mumbai people of D K and Udupi communicates in Tulu only. Their children do not know Kannada Lanaguage. The Yakhagana is polpular among old population and not found favour with younger generation and there is no opportunity in Mumbai to learn Kannada among the masses. But teaching Tulu in D K has no impact for the people of Karnataka residing in Mumbai
Instead of ading as regular subject, Tulu should be taught in a way by holding drama, dance, pardhana, or vocational courses like carpentary, blacksmith, gold ornamentals making etc.

teaching of any language is an art. students should be creative while learning the language. Only those teachers who have skills in communications and involved in art, culture, philosophy be allowed to teach the languages.

@shammi...a lang without script should not be taught in schools rite? but English and Hindi also does not have its own script...don give comments without proper knoweldge, no elder is deciding what student should take up is upto the students to take up their lang, elderly leaders have just provided them with one more option and a small step to promote a local but a beautiful launguage...

Introducing Tulu is just another burden for the stressed, poor students. In China, English is the
language that has been introduced in their schools, and pretty soon, in the next 5 years, you will have chinese BPO's competing with Indian BPO's. They have not introduced Hokkien, Schezwan, Cantonese, or Manchurian languages in China, instead only English and Mandarin (their national language). It shows they want to be more progressive and be a world leader, rather than going backward.

After studying Kannada for 12 years in DK, i have not achieved anything, except to read Udayavani - that's all! If at all, i have moved ahead in my career it is only because of my technical skills, experience, and the English language. Not tulu, Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, Beary or even Hindi!

Good step to protect the language. However instead of adding tulu as a additinal subject in school, it may be better allocating 50% of the marks on third language to tulu for tulu speaking students. Similar to Gulf countries where Muslim students are having to study islamic studied instead of Moral Science.

Mandatory or Opti0nal,they should nt have selected ed TULU or any mangalore local language Coz de r just grabbing kannada script to teach their language. No language should be taught in schools unless it has its own script n grammar. This is injustice on the part of KANNADA.We should fight for Kannada. Moreover WHO ARE THESE ELDERS TO DECIDE WHAT SUBJECTS CHILDREN SHOULD BE TAUGHT N WHAT NOT.LET THEM HAVE STUDENT OPINION POLL IN SCHOOLS OF TWIN DISTRICTS.Jai KARNATAKA,JAI JAI KANNADA....

If its an optional language there is no burden to the children. If it is a compulsory then I think children will suffer.   First of all parents should talk their mother tongue. By adding as a language in schools will not do much for saving one language. How you use a language in your day to day communication will do a big difference than adding it to the school syllebus.

How many can speak Hindi in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh even its a national language and compulsory in primary & high school???? same thing will happen to tulu also.
For instance my mother tongue is Konkani but I speak tulu fluently, I didn't learned tulu in schools. I speak Malayalam also, which I didn't studied in school.   One can learn a new language if its used in the day-to-day communication than studying the same in schools.

This is to be written in golden words in Tulu history. It is heartening to know our future generation will have the opportunity to study the language and the tulu culture.Very futuristic thinking. The language tulu depicts the rich culture of Parshurama Srashti.

The industrialisation of coastal districts was a threat/opportunity to the Tulu language and to its rich culture. The administration has at the right time taken corrective measures. The language and the culture coexist.Kudos to the people who were in the fore front in this mission of strengthening of Tuluva roots.I am proud to be Tuluvite.

Ms. Mona Shetty, I pity on you for your innocence and ignorance. You should have been proud that there are folks who are successful in trying to restore the lost glory of Tulu language. Introducing this language in some schools will atleast prevent it from becoming extinct. I dont understand how this initiative is being termed as moving backward in time. Moving forward and developing does not mean you forget your roots. Jai Tuluvas and Jai Tulunad.

What are you telling Mona Shetty. Konkani and Malayalee (the Byaari language - a dialect of Malayalam) are already constitutionally recognized languages. Do not discourage learning any languages of India. Karnataka is blessed with people speaking many languages and you even heard of a language Coorgi (spoken in Kodagu disctrict) which also needs protectiona and promotion. We want more and more Tulu publications, books, dramas vis a vis teaching in the schools all over Tulunaadu.

there is nothing like additional burden of learning languages. We humans are capable of learning any number of languages and for that matter, children can learn without difficulty, even if they have other languages to learn side by side.

We must congratulate the government and leaders for taking this long awaited step to teach Tulu. All communities residing in the Tulunaadu should take interest and learn this BEAUTIFUL language. Why not extend its teaching among Tulu speaking people bordering Kerala.

Congratulations to all Tuluvas ( all Mangaloreans)for this achivement. this is a great mile stone.

But real test still exist, how many people opt the third language as tulu. talking and writting comments is easy but when it comes to practice we love Hinglish.
Now also nobody put their chikdren in stateboard , People want CBSE, ICSE where only Hinglish there.

This is rather a silly Idea. Instead of burdening the children with one more subject it was better to make Tulu as a regional language in all the local offices and all local govt department's. The language would have been promoted, anyway we will have to accept the govt decision.

One of the best news to be heard. While Konkani will survive because of the usage in the Catholic churches, among the Catholics and others, Tulu needed the support. I do not think, it will be a burden to the children as they will be very comfortable with it, as it is their own language. Tulu is spoken by almost everyone in Dakshina Kannada. My grand parents who are no more in this world, would have loved to hear this news.
