AMMAN (JT) - His Majesty King Abdullah on Monday stressed that the Kingdom is working to achieve comprehensive reform in all fields in accordance with a vision based on dialogue between all segments of society.

At a meeting with a delegation of US congressional aides, the King underlined that this dialogue aims at boosting public participation in the decision-making process and the path of development and modernisation enterprise, according to a Royal Court statement released yesterday.

"We are moving ahead on the right track in the reform process to achieve its goals, particularly political and economic reforms to address the challenges and difficulties facing us," the Monarch said, adding the reforms should meet Jordanians' aspiration of better living conditions by tackling poverty and unemployment.

In response to questions by the visiting delegation, the King said he is looking forward to seeing the National Dialogue Committee come up with a clear vision on the elections and political parties laws as they are the most important pieces of legislation governing political life in the country, the statement said.

The Monarch also expressed hope that the number of political parties will be lower in the future, to represent rightist, leftist and centrist currents and have practical programmes and plans to address various challenges and issues that are of concern to citizens, such as health, education and employment opportunities.

Referring to current political conditions in the Middle East and the peace process, the King reiterated that the international community should shoulder its responsibility in pushing the peace process forward and bringing an end to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict by establishing an independent and viable Palestinian state within the 1967 borders to live in peace and security next to Israel, the Royal Court statement said.

Also during the meeting, attended by Royal Court Chief Khaled Karaki and King's media adviser Amjad Adaileh, the Monarch noted that the developments and changes in the region should not hold back peace efforts, highlighting the importance of the US' leading role in helping bring Palestinians and the Israelis to the negotiating table to address all final status issues to fulfil Palestinians' rights to freedom and statehood, according to the statement.

The US congressional aides underscored Jordan's important role in bringing about peace and stability in the region.

Meanwhile, on Sunday HRH Princess Basma met with the delegates and discussed challenges facing the Kingdom and the need to focus on education as the key to development.

Also on Sunday, Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit met with the US congressional aides and briefed them on the government's procedures to implement political, economic and social reforms.

He also highlighted the economic challenges facing the Kingdom.

Discussions during the meeting also focused on Middle East peace process and efforts exerted to establish an independent Palestinian state.

Bakhit highlighted that Jordan ranks third internationally in taking part in UN peacekeeping missions.
