New DGP takes charge

CHENNAI: K Ramanujam, a 1978 batch IPS officer, assumed charge as Director General of Police (DGP) of Tamil Nadu from outgoing DGP Bhola Nath on Friday. Bhola Nath had replaced Letika Saran as state police chief on the orders of the Election Commission. "The test of police efficiency is the absence of crime and disorder in the state," said Ramanujam after taking charge at a function held at the DGP's office around 1.30 pm.

He said the police force has a great responsibility to maintain law and order. "Our duty is to serve the law impartially," Ramanujam said.

Ramanujam, who was ADGP, Member, Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board, was promoted and appointed as DGP (Intelligence) on Thursday evening by the new government headed by AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa.

At a press conference, outgoing DGP Bhola Nath thanked the media and his subordinates for their support during his tenure. He was transferred and posted as the director of fire and resuce services department in place of KR Shyam Sunder who was posted as the director of vigilance and anti-corruption, which was vacant.
