Tamil Nadu enjoys a major and niche status in the leather map of the world. Tamil Nadu enjoys a quality image in global finished leather world. 60% of Indian tanning capacity is in Tamil Nadu. About 6% of the world supply of finished leather is manufactured in Tami Nadu. 36% of Indian capacity is in Vellore District consisting of Ambur, Pernambut, Ranipet and Vaniyambadi Clusters Tamil Nadu is the national leader in leather with about 60% share in finished leather production. 50% of total export from India is from Tamil Nadu – Major portion is from Vellore District. Tamil Nadu represents the well organized Indian leather sector. The percentage of linkage to global brand products is higher in Tamil Nadu specially Vellore district. Tamil Nadu enjoys a favorable global positioning with respect to environmental preparedness and implementing Zero Liquid Discharge by adopting R O based technology. A major employment generator and contributor to social and gender equity in Tamil Nadu Women are employed in large numbers almost 80% of the workforce, mostly from weaker section of the society in the Indian leather industry and they are making important contribution to the national economy as well as exports. Their entry into productive work has enabled in improving their household situation and life style. Value addition through technologies is highest in the country especially in Tamil Nadu
