LOS ANGELES -- Pitcher Joe Beckwith, sidelined all of last season with an eye injury, was recalled Thursday from the Los Angeles Dodgers' Albuquerque farm club.

To make room for Beckwith, the Dodgers filled his spot at Albuquerque by optioning reliever Alejandro Pena to the Pacific Coast League Dukes.

Beckwith, 27, suffered double vision during spring training last season and underwent surgery twice in 1981 to balance his sight. He began his comeback during the off-season pitching for Santurce of the Puerto Rican League and joined the Dodgers for spring training this year before being assigned to the team's Triple-A club in Albuquerque.

The Dodgers' No. 2 selection in the June 1977 free agent draft, Beckwith pitched in 26 games for the Dukes this season, compiling a 5-6 record with a 6.53 ERA. In 1980, he was 3-3 with a 1.95 ERA in 38 games as a reliever with Los Angeles.

Beckwith will join the team in Los Angeles Friday night for the opener of a three-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies.
