Resumen

SERRANO ALTAMIRANO, Víctor; CORTAZAR RIOS, Matilde  y  OVANDO CRUZ, Manuel Enrique. Donají: new coconut hybrid resistant to lethal yellowing in Mexico. Rev. Mex. Cienc. Agríc [online]. 2011, vol.2, n.5, pp.773-778. ISSN 2007-0934.

The cultivated area with coconut palm in Mexico, decreased in recent years mainly due to phytosanitary problems, among which, stands out the lethal yellowing that in the early 90's ended with tall coconut plantations in the producing states of Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Due to the problem of lethal yellowing of coconut, the most viable alternative was to form hybrids product of crosses of dwarf coconut palm with tall landraces, combining: disease resistance, earliness and production of large numbers of coconuts per cluster of dwarf palm, with the hardiness and greater fruit size of the tall palms of the Pacific. The Donají hybrid, which is resistant to lethal yellowing, is produced at the Experimental Field of Oaxaca Coast of INIFAP, by crossing the Malayo Enano Amarillo cv. Acapulco as the female parent and the Landrace Alto Pacífico cv. Escondido as the male parent. This hybrid can be grown in any coconut producing region in Mexico, it began its production a year ahead of landrace, has a higher yield, and due to their lower height, makes it easier to harvest and applying chemicals to pests and diseases control; also the sweeter taste of the water, makes it suitable for consumption as fresh-fruit.
