'Devastating news': Aussie cricket great in ICU after stroke at 44

The Australian cricket community is rallying around Michelle Goszku after the former women's Test player suffered a stroke on Saturday.

Former teammate Lisa Sthalekar revealed the devastating news about the 44-year-old during the Seven Network's broadcast of the WBBL match between the Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers.

"A big shout-out to Michelle Goszko," Sthalekar said on air.

"She is in ICU. She is talking a little bit and she's improving slowly.

"The cricket community is certainly behind you Gozzy."

Shortly before the Heat began the second innings of the match, current Test star Alyssa Healy also sent her regards to Goszko and her family.

Tributes and well-wishes have since been flooding in on social media.

"Awful news from just now that Michelle Goszko has suffered a stroke and is in hospital," the Australian Women's Cricket Team account tweeted.

"We're all thinking of you Gozzy and wishing you all the very best."

Cricket world rallies around Michelle Goszko

The North Sydney Bears cricket club, where Goszko is the director of women’s cricket, wrote: “All the Bears are sending love to our Director of Women’s Cricket, Michelle Goszko, as she recovers from a stroke.

“She’s awake, able to speak and in good care. Get well soon, Gozzy!”

Sthaleker tweeted: “We all love ya mate and can’t (wait) for you to annoy me again."

While Journalist Melinda Farrell tweeted: "Devastating news about Gozzy.

"Can’t properly express how big-hearted, generous and kind she is."

A right-handed batter and occasional right-arm medium pace bowler, Goszko played four Tests for Australia between 2001 and 2006.

She scored a famous double-century on debut against England at Shenley Park, equalling the world record for the highest individual Test score.

She also made 34 one-day international appearances and featured in one T20I, scoring 895 runs for Australia across all three formats.
