When the name W. A. Criswell is read or heard, certain thoughts come to mind. Many likely remember him as a president of the Southern Baptist Convention, or the founder of the Criswell College in Dallas, Texas, or the senior pastor for five decades of one of the largest Baptist churches in America, or even one of the key figures during the Conservative Resurgence. All of these are acknowledgments of the importance of the life of Criswell, but these do not necessarily capture who he was as a man, as a husband, as a father, as a friend and mentor.

O.S. Hawkins was closely mentored by Criswell and was his pastoral successor. In
Criswell: His Life and Times, Hawkins takes on the task of capturing the life of one of the most important figures in modern Baptist history. He discusses his humble upbringing, the dedication of his parents to ensure he received a proper education, his early years as a pastor, and how his love for the church influenced those around him over the course of his life. It is a biography that is both admiring and honest, and written with the knowledge of someone who could only know Criswell as a friend and a mentor.

I could not put this book down. I loved Dr. Criswell and I love this church. There are many things that I never knew and it was so riveting. Ann Criswell had an angelic voice and I wish she would have sang in the church. How impressive she was able to sing with the Ralph Carmichael Orchestra. The book was written where the stories would go back and forth and then be told again in a later chapter, but overall, it was educational, inspiring, and informative. What a role model Criswell was and what an impact he made in many lives around the world.

A wonderful book that I read in 3 days! For many of us who were touched by Dr. Criswell's ministry, the author offered insights - both positive and negative - into Dr. Criswell's preaching and leadership. That author knew Dr. Criswell intimately, pastored the same church and revealed information that was not known during Criswell's lifetime. The only disappointment was the author omitting Dr. Mac Brunson's time at First Baptist (before the current Dr. Jeffress), his relationship with Mrs. Criswell, and the inability to change the church's culture.

Compelling and captivating biography of Dr. W. A. Criswell, written by a former pastor of First Baptist Church Dallas, who knew him, and served with him. Dr. Hawkins writes with a passionate desire to reveal the life and times of this incredible Pastor, Church builder and Statesman. Well, balanced, enables the reader to glimpse the heart and challenges of one of America’s greatest ministers of the gospel❤️

I was provided an advance copy of this book and devoured it in two days! What an interesting life O.S. Hawkins has chronicled, and he's the perfect man to do it. Hawkins was Criswell's hand-picked successor at First Baptist Church Dallas (one of the Southern Baptist Convention's largest), and he weaves the story of this enigmatic preacher with skill. It reads like a novel - intrigue, love lost (or never gotten), infighting, quelling revolutions within the church, and much, much more. If you're interested in W.A. Criswell's life, you won't find a better biography than this one!
