The activities

The EMSC gathers and disseminates rapid information on earthquakes and their effects. Information is contributed by seismological agencies in the Euro-Med region and around the world, by citizen observers providing eyewitness-observations, and also derived from analysis of twitter data. The EMSC ‘LastQuake’ app, as well as the desktop and mobile websites, are the main dissemination tools for the general public, whereas information for scientists is provided through openly accessible interfaces and web services.

The EMSC actively engages in European and international projects that support its activities and regularly presents them in scientific journals, conferences, and media appearances.

As part of EPOS and member of the EPOS Seismology Consortium, EMSC engages in the European level coordination of seismological data and product services. Wherever possible, EMSC services are integrated in the EPOS data platform.

Recognized among the world-leading scientific centres in the areas of Earth and Climate sciences, the EMSC is also a partner in ARISTOTLE, where it contributes to the emergency assessment by providing advice and operational services for disaster risk and earthquake hazard.

Financed by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, CORE is a multi-disciplinary consortium across and outside Europe established to understand how to define common metrics with respect to the different natural and man-made disaster scenarios, and how to measure, control and mitigate the impact on the populations.

tOward a multi-stakeholder Socio-seisMological Observation network for Seismic risk rEduction in Haiti.
Financed by the ANR-21-CE03-0010, OSMOSE is a S2RHAI pilot project (CNRS/IRD, 2019-2021), which uses low-cost and low-maintenance “Raspberry Shake” (RS) seismological stations to insert simple but scientifically useful seismological observation into the homes of citizens and investigate their modes of appropriation of scientific information. This research-action project aims not only at advancing our knowledge of earthquakes and their perception, but also at improving the operationality of fundamental knowledge towards stakeholders.

The project provides new hazard-related services to the Emergency Response Coordination Centre and to create a pool of experts in the field of Meteorology and Geophysics of Europe. It builds on a consolidated and multi-disciplinary partnership consisting of world-leading scientific centres in the areas of Earth and Climate sciences, providing operational and monitoring services, early warning and information systems as well as contributing to innovation and research actions.

Real-time earthquake rIsk reduction for a reSilient Europe.
Financed by the Horizon 2020 programme of the European Commission, RISE studies seismic risk, its changes, importance, and evolution at all stages of the risk management process. The project will depict current potentials and limits as well as advance the state of the art to reduce seismic risk in Europe and beyond.

The project aims at better defining the citizen response to an earthquake through the development of the official EMSC mobile application, Lastquake. This app allows the rapid collection of earthquake eyewitnesses’ reports and to merge them into situation maps that can be used by emergency units.
