This is happening to my 14 pro max on iOS 16.0.1, when charging, too...

I'm glad that I found this thread as there's very little online about this issue and it's good to know I'm not the only one.

Hopefully 16.1 will fix it when it's released.

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I didn’t find anything online about it either except I think a few days ago someone posted it on Apple forums. But overall I have been seeing slowly more and more problems showing up over the web. Glad I’m not the one who has the camera issue

[–]ILoveDCEU_SoSueMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work from home is really bring down the productivity.

It could also be that a bunch of noob software developers are joining top companies just by learning algorithms and leetcode. They don't know the first thing about software development or writing good code.

[–]mvdude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi. I've seen this restart happen at least daily since I received the iPhone 14 Pro on release day. It happens when phone is charging. I've seen it happen with 16.0.1, 16.0.2, an Anker wireless charger, and a lightning cord tethered to PC. I've tried setting up the phone several ways: phone-to-phone from my iPhone 12 Pro, erasing and then restoring a backup, and erasing and setting up as new. There is a panic file in the analytics log each time it happens. This is the error string: SID 0 CTE invalid exception on read of DVA 0. There is a similar thread running over on MacRumors. Search for "14-pro-max-kernel-panic." There are reports of this also happening on 16.1 beta.

[–]Vani__00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just found this post... one hundred different problems...

The problem seems to be a kernel panic, Exception handler missing.

If it is the only think to do is to wait for an update, those workaround can work but not 100%

[–]monsiourchat 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Restore your device and set it up as new. Test it out. If issues persist consider returning within 14 day return period. Could be Kernel Panic, could be just a bug.

[–]aequitasXI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which 14 day period? When I was talking to Verizon earlier about this, they mentioned they weren’t aware of a 14 day period, but that they gave 30 days. Is that if you bought it direct through Apple?

[–]dblrnbw30 2 points3 points  (30 children)

Same issue. Restoring and setting up as new now.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (28 children)

Let us know if that fixes it

[–]dblrnbw30 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Did a DFU mode restore and currently adding apps back on 🤪 we will know tomorrow morning if it fixed it.

[–]hodge_podge11 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Did it do the trick?

[–]dblrnbw30 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yep hasn't restarted on its own

[–]hodge_podge11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna do that when I get home. I’ll update y’all as well

[–]dblrnbw30 1 point2 points  (19 children)

Woke up to no message saying my phone was restarted!!!! Seems like DFU restore and setup as new is the way to go.

[–]rspangler371 2 points3 points  (11 children)

I went a couple of days and it didn't happen so please let us know in a couple of more days. I'm going to wait and see if the next couple of updates fix it. I have way too much data in my backup I need and would rather live with this issue then to setup as new lol.

[–]scapegoat81 1 point2 points  (10 children)

Agree 100%. Setting up as new is a PIA. I have an appointment scheduled w/ Genius Bar for Saturday. I wanna rule out bad hardware first before restoring or waiting for an update.

[–]rspangler371 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Several people on Macrumors are getting replacements with the same issue. More and more people are having the issue. Some theories are it might be iCloud photo sync since this only happens when charging so some will test that. Many are certain it’s hardware at this point. I’ve got a year if it’s hardware so I’m going to wait and see if apple can get a better grip on it as I hate redoing everything. Also the refurbs tend to have better qc then the original from my exp.

[–]scapegoat81 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I’d like to get this situated asap. I’m not accepting a refurb on an issue that I’ve had since the first week of owning a premium device. If it’s hardware related, I want a brand new one.

[–]rspangler371 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen 4-5 people with new replacements with the same issue so either many of them are bad or it’s software. I don’t have the time or patients to deal with swapping and setting everything up again if it most likely software. But your call.

[–]MyChoiceTaken 1 point2 points  (4 children)

? All iCloud data is repopulated once you sign in to iCloud.

[–]aequitasXI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s even worse when you then have to go through multiple people to have all your work stuff added back in as well

[–]Can_I_be_serious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reset and start as new worked for me. Been 3 days now without a restart on charge.

[–]stebben 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Same issue here, 14 pro max on iOS 16.0.1. Restarts every 10-20 minutes while charging. Also noticed that when it restarts itself, any messages or calls I received will have the number unsaved even though it’s in my contacts.

[–]ILoveDCEU_SoSueMe 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Holy f. Wtf is going on with apple?

[–]cmandet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poor qc

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (5 children)

One other thing I’ve noticed is it doesn’t look like optimized charging is working. It just charges straight to 100% and stays there.

[–]mech_eng98 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I didn’t think about this, that’s a good point. I’ll try to turn it off and see what happens. As far as it goes with charging to 100% each time could be because it hasn’t learned your schedule yet or maybe it truly is a bug

[–]scapegoat81 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This is a very good point.

I had chatted w/ Apple this morning & they asked if I could send a screenshot of Settings/Battery/Battery Health. My optimized charging is always on.

But they ran a OTA Diagnostics test that came out ok. We’ll see what happens @ the Genius Bar on Sat.

[–]mech_eng98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, please let us know what they say!

[–]AdPersonal708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for not learning the schedule yet.

Since we all got our iPhone 14’s around the same time, my guess is that none of our phones have hit the minimum threshold for “learning,” so optimization hasn’t kicked in yet.

[–]No-Ad-6338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for me. I checked the battery status and seems just never optimised the charging even enabled.

[–]mech_eng98 2 points3 points  (1 child)

[–]mvdude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They cite the workaround of disabling background app refresh, which I think this thread has already ruled out as not being fully effective. In fact, when I set up my iPhones, background app refresh is one of the first things I turn off, so I'm certain mine was restarting with this turned off. (On the whole, the writer of this article did a much better job understanding the nature of the issue than others I've read.)

[–]Least-Experience-858 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has to be a software issue I would not waste my time swapping phones as this will just continue. I’m sure apple is working on a software update. I also have the same issue

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having this issue as well. Also sometimes while charging it will make this alert sound and then the brightness will go to 0 until I manually set it back.

[–]mathieupothier 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Also have this issue. I restored it but kept the backup, still the same. Are you on 16.1 beta?

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

No I’m on 16.0.1

[–]mathieupothier 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I’m now on 16.1 beta 2 and it did not restart overnight last night for the first time. Let’s see if it makes a come back in the coming days

[–]tuddrussel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is good to know. My 14 Pro does this but my wife’s doesn’t so I assumed I was going to have to get a new one. I’ll have to hop on the beta as well.

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s good to know. I thought it was only me at first and suspected hardware but now I’m starting to see it’s a general problem makes me happy and figured it would fix with the next update.

[–]rspangler371 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same issue here. 14 pro max. Only restarts occasionally while charging magnetic or lightning.

[–]mech_eng98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I updated to the beta and am still having this issue myself. No idea what is wrong. I've tried charging it from a wall outlet and from my computer, but it happens in both places.

[–]rspangler371 1 point2 points  (5 children)

16.0.2 is out. Trying it now.

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Cool let us know!

[–]rspangler371 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Sadly it just rebooted sitting hear plugged in at work. I'm going to call Apple tomorrow and see if I can get and Exchange.

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Mine too. It seems to be a widespread problem now more and more posts showing up. Been reading that iOS 16.1 beta 2 solves that issue

[–]rspangler371 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I saw on Mac rumors where beta 2 does not.

[–]mech_eng98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm or did not fix it for me. Did a reset in dfu mode and so far so good. Charging it now, I’ll report back soon

[–]goldwalkingcane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Count me in! So frustrating!

[–]mech_eng98 1 point2 points  (18 children)

I believe I can confirm resetting your phone in DFU mode works. Been charging it for a good while with no restarts! Give that a try if nothing else works

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 1 point2 points  (17 children)

I am doing a DFU mode restore as well we will see what happens.

[–]mech_eng98 2 points3 points  (16 children)

Woke up this morning and it looks like it restarted… oof

[–]rspangler371 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Your on 16.0.2 and updated all your apps? I’m perplexed as to why I got 1 restart thur after I updated to .02 and none since then and I’ve tried hard to get it to do it both magnetic and wired. Doesn’t make sense but I doubt it’s hardware. One guy on macrumors got a replacement and same issue.

[–]mech_eng98 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yes, newest iOS and everything is updated to my knowledge.

And that’s good to know. I contacted Apple and they recommend I got a new device but it’s hard to believe it’s hardware at this point. Maybe it’s best to hold off on replacing for now and if it gets worse or doesn’t get fixed I can replace it under the limited warranty. Don’t want to go through the trouble if it’s not going to fix anything

[–]rspangler371 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I’ve read a few people have set up as new with no backup and it resolved it for them. I didn’t do that. It just doesn’t sound like hardware based on the stuff I’ve seen. I used to have it several times a day then no longer. Wonder if something burnt in lol? So strange and annoying we can’t pin it down.

[–]mech_eng98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have no idea. Doing a restore fixed it for me at first. It’s only happened once since a few days ago when I reset it. Could be the software “settling in” or something

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 1 point2 points  (11 children)

I let it charging for 12 hours not a single restart just to test it. Used it for a while out it back on charger and I got a restart. So the DFU didn’t work or half worked :(

[–]mech_eng98 1 point2 points  (10 children)

I don’t want to get a new phone if I don’t have to but I might contact Verizon to see what they say. Apple said I should go to them to get a new phone lol

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

So I got a replacement phone and it’s doing the exact same thing. Someone else on another forum said they got 3 replacement phones with the exact same issue.

[–]mech_eng98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your feedback. I’m assuming it’s software at this point unless quality control is so poor that all phones are affected by plagued hardware

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I contacted ATT and they told me to go to the store and get a new phone. I went to the ATT store and told me I need to contact Apple. I contact Apple and they told me I need to return the device back to ATT. Im tired of setting a new phone for the past week and getting the runaround. Someone on apple community forums said they have an appointment as they think its hardware related but from what everyone is experiencing and the amount of people having the same exact issue its software related as the Apple support person told me when he screen shared to view analytics and data. I also think that most people dont notice their phone restarted because they charge it overnight and think that apple is being apple requiring the pin code to use face id.

[–]mech_eng98 1 point2 points  (4 children)

So Apple told you it was a software issue? How odd. My initial thought is that it’s software as well, but who knows. I unfortunately don’t think there is anywhere I could go that will be able to tell me exactly what it is unless internally Apple recognizes it and gives a solution

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

According to the support person and what he saw yes its a bug. When I think about it makes sense because it happens on Pro/Pro Max and its the only phone lineup with the "Dynamic Island" so my guess is either something glitches out when charging updating battery % etc and forces a restart unless its some of the apps we use that cause it for example I noticed my garmin app it gets cutout and I cant press the top row because of the "dynamic island"

[–]mech_eng98 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Interesting. If I get a new phone, I’ll come back here and make a new comment on the deal to let you know if that fixed it or not.

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Let us know if you get a new phone and it fixed.

[–]dmulcahey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing happening here. 14 pro Max. Went through remote diagnostics in chat and then on the phone with apple in an escalation call. They didn’t see anything and now I have an in store appointment Tuesday. I’ll report back after the appointment.

[–]defjamblaster 1 point2 points  (3 children)

hmm, mine seems to turn off completely sometimes while charging. i typically have to do a reset to get it back on. is this related to the same issue or should i start a separate post about it?

[–]mech_eng98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be its own thing. Haven’t had mine do anything quite like this. My phone literally just restarts. Screen comes back on every time

[–]djxpress 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That’s what has happened to mine too! It completely turned off 2x so far while on MagSafe charger

[–]SurrealAdventure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, a lot of people are having the same problem. I've had mine replaced once already at the genius bar, and, same thing.

[–]dmulcahey 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Can everyone try something? Globally disable background app refresh and see if the problem goes away.

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will try it tonight and report tomorrow!

[–]AdPersonal708 1 point2 points  (12 children)

Just out of curiosity, does everyone have different storage capacities? Service providers? What about how you purchased your phone?

My iPhone 14 Pro is 256gb on AT&T and I got it directly from apple.

My mother’s 14 Pro is 128gb on AT&T and she got it from AT&T. But she does not have this issue.

[–]aequitasXI 1 point2 points  (3 children)

To further add to the weirdness: My wife and I each got 1 TB iPhone 14 Pros from Verizon, only difference being that I had the white one and she has the purple.

She hasn’t seen this issue at all yet, and I had seen it frequently.

Previous days it was super sporadic, to the point where I assumed it just automatically applied an update or something and needed a restart. Yesterday was the worst, it was probably 50+ times. iCloud backup was the most common trigger, but it also happened randomly at other times like opening a photo, trying to use Chrome etc.

Doing a hard reset seemed to clear some of the glitchy behavior for a bit, but then it came back as soon as I hooked up the charging cable.

Knock on wood, it hasn’t happened since I turned off “Sync this phone” in the iCloud photo settings and turned off background app refresh.

🤞🏻

[–]Intelligent_Cream_31 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How do you know iCloud backup was the trigger?

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the dark purple 256gb with AT&T. I pre ordered mine through AT&T website

[–]No-Ad-6338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iPhone 14 pro purple 512g. Special Hong Kong / China version with no esim.

[–]dmulcahey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Space black 512gb pro max ATT bought from apple

[–]6t8stang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Space Gray Pro Max 256MB on Xfinity Wireless

[–]AdPersonal708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m seeing several 256GB and 512GB phones affected. Anyone with 128GB?

[–]mech_eng98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

256GB verizon

[–]Can_I_be_serious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iPhone 14 Pro, 256gb, Purple. In Australia, bought from Apple directly and on the Telstra network. Having same issue as others on this thread.

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t confirm yet but I turned off Wi-Fi (until tomorrow )overnight and it didn’t restart in 10 hours but Wi-Fi turned on eventually on its own and it restarted once. I will try again in the next few days with Wi-Fi fully turned off and I also turned off iPhone backup

[–]nomaded 1 point2 points  (1 child)

When using the weather wallpaper on my lock screen, my 14 Pro 512 (VZW) will crash/reboot within 2 min or so of being charged. But using a static lock screen wallpaper doesn't seem to trigger it, but I haven't extensively tested this theory.

I have noticed over the past couple weeks that if I'm using the phone while it's charging, it doesn't crash/reboot, but if left idle it does.

[–]AdPersonal708 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m using a static wallpaper for my lock and home screens.

Like someone mentioned before, it’s weird how everybody seems to have different triggers and solutions.

[–]Vealmryin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same issue. Restarting under night charging. In the morning everything works but is offline and I have to reboot it for going online.

iPhone 14 Pro, iOS 16.0.2

[–]No-Ad-6338 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just happened again while charging. Further looking into the kernel panic log something written : loaded kexts:\ncom.apple.driver.AppleUSBEthernetDevice\t7.0\ncom.apple.driver.AppleIDAMInterface\t1\ncom.apple.driver.AppleUSBDeviceNCM\t5.0.0\ncom.apple.driver.AppleUSBDeviceMux\t1.0.0d1\ncom.apple.iokit.IOAccessoryPortUSB\t1.0.0\ncom.apple.driver.AppleUSBMike\t1.0.0d1

Don’t know is it related to the usb Ethernet driver. The phone wifi just disconnected until I input the password to unlock my phone.

[–]Zapor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem just started for me. Out of the blue. The phone was working fine. Now every time I put it on charger within 15 minutes it restarts. I’ve made appointment at an Apple Store. Let’s see what they say. I’ve missed my alarm twice already. Looks like I’ll need to invest in an alarm clock now. 😂

[–]DrEnergy 1 point2 points  (8 children)

I had exactly the same issue; my iPhone 14 Pro Max was restarting when I used a wireless charger. At first I didn’t think much of it, but the restart was happening every time and I noticed every morning I had to re-enter my passcode. So I took the iPhone into my local Apple Store the other day and they ran diagnostics. Apparently they detected a hardware failure in the charging circuitry, and I was given a replacement. I’d had the phone just over 3 weeks. Wondering if this is an issue in an early batch of iPhone 14 Pros?

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

That’s what they told me too but Apple support when they saw the kernel panic multiple times told me it’s a software bug. So I don’t know but according to other forums the culprit is iCloud Photos and processing the pictures that crashes the cpu

[–]DrEnergy 1 point2 points  (5 children)

So far no problems with my new device and I did a straight restore from the previous iPhone. I’m using iCloud Photos too. It’s only been a few days though so I’ll let you know if my replacement develops the same problem. Currently it’s running 16.0.3

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I’ve been curious to see if this update fixed the issue since it wasn’t mentioned in the change log

[–]Logical_Act_7244 2 points3 points  (3 children)

My device didn’t restart overnight while charging after updating to 16.0.3 yesterday. It looks promising.

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the update! I will turn on iCloud photos back on and see if it restarts.

[–]6t8stang 1 point2 points  (2 children)

So far 16.0.3 is working well! No reboots while charging after a few days

[–]tuddrussel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm almost the same for me! I haven't had any nightly restarts, but I did have one random restart while I was at work so I'm not sure what was going on with that, but that could very well just be an outlier. 🤞🏼

[–]6t8stang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think 16.0.3 stopped the kernel panics, but I did have a reboot overnight based on the shortcuts notification displayed. At least now when it restarts Wi-Fi is reconnected and FaceID works without requiring the passcode entry.

[–]hakanloob1989 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Just wondering if anyone is still having this issue. I’m using an iPhone 14 pro and have had this issue since getting my phone at release back in Sept. I’m fully up to date (16.1.1). For me, I can tell that my phone restarted overnight while charging as I wake up to a notification that my automations have been enabled. Also, some of my widgets are blank until I launch their respective apps. I’ve never had a panic error in logs, but do have a “SystemMemoryReset” log at the exact time my phone appears to restart.

[–]goldwalkingcane 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I had the issues, took my iPhone q4 pro max to the Apple Bar, they gave me a replacement, same thing happened with the replacement so I went back to the Apple Bar a week later. This time they brought out a new phone and instead of installing from my iCloud backup, we just did a minimal install as they thought something in my iCloud backup was corrupt. So in this install, none of my apps, etc were installed. It’s a pain as you have to sign into everything and download your apps one at a time (the good side of this is I only downloaded the apps I currently use…having owned iPhones since the original one I had a ton of apps, many of which I had not used in years so I only have the current stuff on my phone now. Anyway I no longer have the issue of random restarting while on the charger.

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had the problem since iOS 16.1 and I’m now using it as normal iCloud back up photos and whatnot. As for widgets being blank I’ve had that issue since an update while on 13 Pro but it’s rare that will happen.

[–]aequitasXI -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Has anyone taken the new update? And does it seem to fix this issue / allow us to use background app refresh again?

[–]rspangler371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is odd. I updated thursday to 16.0.2 and had 1 restart an hour later on the charger. It’s now Sunday and not 1 restart. I’ve tried very hard to get it to restart on the mag and wire. Something has changed. Before it was easy to replicate.

[–]scapegoat81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m experiencing the same thing. At first, it was just crashing while viewing camera footage on my Eufy app (which it still does). I wake up a lot during the night & last night as I was tossing & turning, I notice a bright light coming from bedside & then I heard the boot up chime.

It crashed while on my Belkin MagSafe charger in the middle of the night, doing nothing.

[–]ZS88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Restoring my device to 16.0.2 and setting up as new (Not from backup) fixed this issue for me. I haven’t had a single reboot since doing this.

[–]No-Ad-6338 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Same thing happened to me. I got my 14 pro at 23rd and updated it to iOS 16.0.2 at 24th. Usually I charge my phone all the time at office using cable and today just find out it will randomly reboot. And there is log file called panic-full and ResetCounter when the reboot happen. I really hope this could fixed by software update I don't want to go for a replacement and reinstall everything.

[–]No-Ad-6338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update for my case. It seems this bug will not happen if the iPhone is not locked. I always disabled auto lock timeout and tonight I just charging my phone and let the game finish the daily mission and go for bath an hour. No reboot happened and checked there is no panic and restart counter log. The battery charged from around 50% to 88%. You may try is it same for your case.

[–]heyitsjustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue on 14PM!

[–]mingtwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is frustrating. Same has been happening to me.

Upgraded to 16.1 beta 2 last night but still restarted, multiple times while charging, beta 3 is out to developers, will wait for the public beta. Checked the logs, seems it's always backboardd crashed and triggered springboard to reload. Not sure if it is hardware or software.

[–]Least_Cover_9307 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hi all, I have iphone 14 pro for couple of days an I am on the latest public beta. No issue with restarting so far. Maybe I am lucky or it will show up later.

[–]AdPersonal708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother got her iPhone 14 Pro the same day I did, and she also charges her phone at night. She hasn’t noticed any restarting and I had her check her logs for the panic file - she had nothing. So she seems to be just as lucky as you, lol

[–]tBlase27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this thread because it just happened to me last night and I missed my wake up alarms.

[–]TexasYankee281 0 points1 point  (5 children)

My 14 Pro keeps restarting all day long. I’ve tried deleting recently updated apps, resetting phone and restoring with a slimmed down backup, resetting phone completely and setting up as new…. None of them have solved the issue and I’m getting so aggravated. I’ve only seen people mention it restarting while charging. Is anyone else having the issue of it restarting constantly throughout the day whether or not you’re charging it? It’s already done it at least five or six times this morning and it’s only 9:20am.

[–]WishIWasOnTheWater 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I am also experiencing random reboots. Started happening yesterday. I’ve had my phone reboot while just sitting there on my desk, not being charged, while on a call, while viewing Wyze camera footage, and more.

I am not sure what is going on but this is very aggravating. I may need to stop by an Apple Store to get this looked at.

[–]Remon89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have the same problem, did you already stepped by a Apple store about this problem?

Any luck with yours? I have an appt at the Apple Store tomorrow morning. Hoping they can do something about it. It is driving me craaaaaazy!!

[–]TexasYankee281 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I brought mine in today and they found an issue with the logic board. They replaced my phone with a new one. Fingers crossed this one doesn’t have any problems!

iPhone 14 Pro Max - iOS 16.0.2 (20A380)

Had a restart previously while charging, then again today while not charging - just as I looked at the screen to check the weather widget…

[–]mech_eng98 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I do not have this issue when using CarPlay. I charge my phone to and from work with it on and have no issues there!

[–]AdPersonal708 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Same, no issue with CarPlay. But when I head to work in the mornings, my phone is already at 100%, and on my way home it isn’t plugged in long enough to get up to the 90-95% threshold where this seems to occur.

[–]mech_eng98 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Mine happens at about any percentage and I usually don’t charge at night unless I need to. Weird how it’s different for some than others.

[–]AdPersonal708 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Been having this same issue ever since I got my new phone. Restarts overnight while it’s charging. Happens with both the Apple cable and charger as well as my Anker wireless charger.

I disabled Background App Refresh last night before bed but my phone still restarted around 6am this morning. My iPhone 14 Pro is running iOS 16.0.2.

I’m going to try leaving background app refresh on tonight and turning off optimized battery charging.

Also, I used the following tool to analyze my panic log file and it listed the NAND or WiFi module as possible culprits. Not sure how reliable that is. https://github.com/waynebonc/iDeviceLogAnalyzer-public

I have an Apple Store appointment on Friday but I’m hesitant since some have stated that they got a new phone and it had the same issue.

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I also did the tool to analyze and it comes up the same. After reading others posts I don’t think it’s hardware related. I’m on my 2nd phone now and it’s still doing it. I will leave it to Apple to figure this out as I am tired of resetting everything and setting as new. I turned off background refresh and still did it. I will try the battery optimize charging thing and then I will try with Wi-Fi off (suspecting iCloud backups). I’ve also gotten an Apple Watch today so I deleted my Garmin apps since it was acting weird.

[–]AdPersonal708 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Good to know you got the same result with that tool.

When I first found the panic log file, I had another log file for Facebook Messenger 2 seconds earlier, so I thought they were related. Deleted Messenger days ago but that didn’t help. A lot of people mentioned the Eufy app, but I don’t have any issues with my Eufy app or any logs regarding it. So far, the only app that seems to crash for me is Grindr, so I may try deleting it and seeing if that does anything.

For the iCloud backups, I don’t think that is my issue. My phone says that the last successful backup was last night at 11:54pm and my restart occurred a little after 6am this morning. I don’t think iCloud would have tried to back up again so soon. But who knows.. at this point we’re all just guessing, lol

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turning off optimize battery charging did nothing. As soon as I stopped using my phone 5 seconds later it restarted at about 63% battery. I’m now trying turning off Wi-Fi and leaving my data on it’s been on the charger for 1.5hours with no restart. Going to leave it plugged overnight and check tomorrow morning. Someone had mentioned iCloud because charging + Wi-Fi it uploads and downloads and what not

[–]kimbofattz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happen to my 14 pro last night while charging, missed my alarm and my saved contact called but showed their number instead of saved name. Also note that optimize charging doesn’t seem to work now. This is annoying, hopefully Apple comes up with a hotfix soon

[–]kimbofattz 0 points1 point  (1 child)

[–]AdPersonal708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My alarm seems to work fine after the restart, but I have mine set up as part of my sleep settings rather than just a plain alarm, so maybe that’s why.

And the phone number thing is normal. Any time you restart your phone, contacts and other personal info won’t display on the Lock Screen until after you enter your passcode.

Also I don’t think the battery optimization is working for any of us because all our iPhone 14’s are so new. As it states in the description, it learns usage details in order to optimize charging. My guess is that it needs a minimum amount of data before it can start working, and none of us have hit that threshold yet. Just a guess though.

[–]Puntano23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having the same issue. Not necessarily when charging. Just randomly during the day. I have the panic error in my log every time this happens.

[–]twinpeaks_sf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to all reporting their scenarios — it now appears unrelated to hardware (replacement iPhones have the same issue), iCloud backups, background app refresh, and optimized charging. The jury is still out on whether switching off network connections (e.g., WiFi) will arrest the issue. I wonder if folks have personal automations running. I have a few with Focus modes as triggers for Timery (a time-tracking app) timers. It’s also helpful to continue sharing which software version you’re on — I wonder if the new/upcoming 16.1 beta builds help. Though this has been reported as an iPhone 14 issue, I’ve been on the iOS 16 beta all summer, and this overnight restart issue was common with my iPhone 13 Pro. The daytime restarting issue is new.

[–]Iwillnit4getus 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I had this issue as well. I just had a call with an Apple Senior Advisor and he ran mobile diagnostics. The first test went fine, but he said there was an issue when he ran the system stability test. He said this could be a hardware issue and I have to take it to an Apple Store for them to diagnose which part is causing the problem.

[–]Iwillnit4getus 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Got replacement phone. Replacement phone has same issue. Guessing it’s a software issue.

[–]NotACoolMan52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16.0.2 iPhone 14 Pro Max, I got this issue too in this morning.

[–]xxBurntToastxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16.0.2 iPhone 14 Pro Max… same issue. :(

[–]mingtwo 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I upgraded to 16.1 beta 3, after that no restart yet

[–]Zapor 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Can you confirm it hasn’t restarted yet?

[–]Remon89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 14 Pro max did reset itself 3 times today, and it wasn't charging, so it looks like it is not related to charging, but I think due something else.

[–]xteryt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have this issue on iPhone 14 Pro on iOS 16.0.2

[–]scapegoat81 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Ok. Update time.

My local Apple Store ran the same diagnostics as OTA from Apple Support & everything came back fine.

So he then ran a more in depth diagnostics. This one came back as a system error/problem.

They recommended to Reset & Setup as new, then run another test. After the Restore, the new test came out clean.

They said it was prob something corrupt in the backup.

I’m starting to think the culprit is the Eufy app cuz I didn’t reinstall it & phone hasn’t crashed yet. My wife’s iPhone even crashes the same way in Eufy.

This is where it gets interesting. I checked updates for the Eufy HomeBase, none. Then I ran through more settings. In HomeBase/General/Working Mode, it was on Performance (Beta).

Now my wife literally NEVER uses this app. I know for a fact she didn’t change this setting. So I change it back to Standard, then reboot the HomeBase.

I then go back into the settings, & it went back to Performance (Beta). This is def a Eufy bug.

I’m gonna monitor this for the next few days & see if this fixes the crashes.

Fingers crossed.

Thanks for this...

After my initial issues with my iPhone 14 Pro Max on both iOS 16.0.1 & 16.0.2, I did a clean install of 16.0.2 by connecting the phone to my Mac and set it up as new, last Weekend.

Over the last week, I've slowly added my Apps when I needed them but I have NOT installed the Eufy App based on various reports that I've seen about this App misbehaving.

Since doing this, I haven't had a single restart whilst charging but, interestingly, I did have a crash/reboot whilst viewing one of my Eufy cameras via the Apple Home/HomeKit App when I was away from my home, last Wednesday.

[–]WishIWasOnTheWater 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I am glad you seem to be closer to resolving this but I am having the same issue and I have never owned a Eufy camera not have I ever installed the Eufy App.

[–]scapegoat81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update 2….

Still haven’t reinstalled Eufy after the Restore as new & my phone finally crashed while on the charger overnight. Wtf. Back to the Genius Bar

[–]Idcfml 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 14 Pro had just turned off when I woke up in the morning today. Took a while to turn it back on so maybe the display just didn’t wanna turn on. Not noticed any restarts though.

[–]No-Ad-6338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just restarted again while charging and found that besides the wifi disconnected until unlock the phone, the first phone call will also missed and directly go to voicemail. Don’t know is it related to I used wifi call and the wifi disconnected or directly related to the reboot problem.

[–]AdPersonal708 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hey u/Ok-Investigator2075, I turned off iCloud photo sync last night. Glad it worked for you but no luck for me sadly. Once again, seems like everyone has a unique trigger and a unique solution.

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I have had it plugged in 48 hours with no restart. Everyone has different triggers but it seems that the most common issue is photo syncing and/or background app refresh as most on macforums have reported. It also might have helped that I did a restore through my Mac

[–]djxpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iPhone 14 Pro Max 512 GB on 16.0.2. So far while charging on Magsafe, mine has shut off twice. I usually put it on the charger at night around 60% battery left. It's charging most of the night and I see the AOD display then I'll go to pick it up, it will turn dark and I'll have to force reset it to turn on. Battery will be fully charged.

[–]dmulcahey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed 16.1 b3 yesterday and had my first crash free night last night. Hopefully things stay like this.

[–]RomanJIsraelBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same is happening to me :/

[–]Can_I_be_serious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to do a 'from scratch' restore and setup to try and solve this.

Out of interest, I found that the Apple Configurator app for MacOS was useful in that it allowed me to export a list of every app installed on my device in csv so I at least had a list to go to to reinstall and login to everything again.

[–]Vealmryin 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Some news?

[–]AdPersonal708 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I’ve given up and just been avoiding charging my phone overnight. And when I do charge it, I turn off auto-lock and leave my screen on. Just hoping that either iOS 16.0.3 or iOS 16.1 resolve this issues. Pretty ridiculous for a $1200 phone.

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve also given up at this point. I keep getting sent to the Genius Bar which is a total of 4 hour trip. I was sent twice and got 2 different replacements with the exact same issue. They need to address this considering a lot of us have this issue and I’m tired of doing restore and what not and I only have a few apps that takes me maybe 10 minutes to have what I used to. I can’t imagine others that have hundreds or thousands of apps

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Mine started back up again restarting after a week or so of no restarts

[–]dmulcahey 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Install the 16.1 beta. It will stop

[–]nomaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my 14 Pro swapped out at the local Apple Store on Friday Sep 30. I restored from a local backup -- that took about 4 hours to restore about 200GB, and I needed to redownload all my apps from the App Store -- they weren't automatically reinstalled.

A week goes by with no panics while charging. The first one happened overnight, Friday Oct 7 to Saturday Oct 8. Last night, there at least 4 panic/restarts before I took it off the charger because it was already at 100%. I had a couple panic/restarts since then today, while attempting to complete a local backup.

Disabling auto-lock didn't help. I just disabled app refresh, changed the lockscreen wallpaper so it's not the weather wallpaper. And it just panicked/restarted, so none of those settings have helped this problem.

[–]Logical_Act_7244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having this problem. Have been since getting the 14 pro - 256 gb.

I'd be interested to know how many people have seen this fixed with the 16.1 beta 3 or 4.

Interesting for me is that the reboot never happens when I'm using my MagSafe battery pack (Apple brand, not third party). I thought that was likely because the phone only charges to 90% battery with the pack on, but when I charged with the pack plugged in, so to 100%, it didn't restart. For whatever reason charging with the MagSafe has been my workaround.

[–]AnJarBo 0 points1 point  (4 children)

iOS 16.0.3 was just released... it's not mentioned on the changelog but crossing all posible fingers so that this issue is sorted on it!

[–]Logical_Act_7244 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Please let us know if you test and it fixes!

[–]Vealmryin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16.0.3 here, if I go to bed with low battery, in the morning I find it offline and rebooted. Problem still persists. ☹️

[–]mvdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over in another forum, multiple users are now confirming that 16.1 beta 4 fixes the restarting while charging bug. Also, I am personally finding this to be true. 16.0.1, 16.0.2, and earlier betas of 16.1 do not seem to have the fix. Unsure about 16.0.3. I plan to stay on 16.1 beta 4 right now until the final 16.1 is released.

[–]classeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, things got worse with public beta 16.1 (20B5072b). Multiple resprings last night while charging. Had to take the phone off the charger. iPhone 13 Pro.

[–]BOLISARIO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two week old iPhone 14 Pro Max just randomly rebooted this morning for the first time which I thought was weird. I searched online and found the 9to5 Mac article and link to this thread. I also updated to 16.0.3 right after the reboot incident, not sure if this will make a difference.

[–]AMonitorDarkly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had an overnight restart on my 14P running iOS 16.0.3. It’s only the second time it’s happened. The first being around when the news first broke.

[–]SNapEl85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16.0.3 on an iPhone 14 Pro Max 512GB

Restarts unexpectedly when left to charge for the night. I’ll wake up to prompts for passcode due to the restart and find panic dumps corresponding to them.

[–]gianrftcc 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Did iOS 16.1 fix the problem ?

[–]Ok-Investigator2075[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did for me everything on and no restarts

[–]AdPersonal708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iOS 16.1 seems to have fixed everything for me. Phone was on the wireless charger all night and never crashed. Glad this is over!

[–]Vealmryin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iOS 16.1, iPhone 14 pro.

No restarts until this night. Wired charge, no magsafe. 😫 I thought it was solved, I hadn't had restarts since the update..

[–]BigZ1212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My iPhone 14 Pro Max 128gb did this last night. First time I noticed. It's on iOS 16.1.1.
Used a Magsafe charger.

[–]WannabeShepherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iPhone 12 Pro with iOS17, I started to experience this bug…

[–]dmu_girl-2008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had my first restart 13 pro max 17.0.3 happened when I hit 100%.
