The dystopian future that George Orwell predicted for 1984 has finally arrived, 100 years late and ten times as brutal. To save all that he loves, Orwell will have to travel between his future self—Erik Blair, Orwell's descendant and unwitting heir to his legacy—and the past.

As for Erik Blair, his life plan isn’t overly complicated: Avoid trouble. Avoid pain. And get from one day to the next without attracting the “wrong” kind of attention, which really equates to any kind of attention when the government and its robotic thugs are involved. In this post-apocalyptic world where everyone marches to the beat of the same drummer, Blair—a young man earmarked for a future of compliance and servitude—isn’t volunteering to be anyone’s hero. Unfortunately, life doesn’t always go according to plan.

Battlefield America: The War on the American People and A Government of Wolves: The Emerging American Police State, Whitehead also writes a syndicated weekly column, which focuses on tyranny, injustice, the government's use of emerging technologies to oppress the population, resistance, activism, and the tendency of power to corrupt.
_____

“Where is Thomas Paine now that we need him? He’s here just in the nick of time in the person of John Whitehead, an uncompromising debunker of lies, rhetoric mongers, rights-shredders and the criminal acts of our shameless, double-crossing government.”–David Dalton, New York Times bestselling author and a founding editor of Rolling Stone Magazine

John W. Whitehead is an attorney and author who has written, debated and practiced widely in the area of constitutional law and human rights. Whitehead’s concern for the persecuted and oppressed led him, in 1982, to establish The Rutherford Institute, a nonprofit civil liberties and human rights organization whose international headquarters are located in Charlottesville, Virginia. Deeply committed to protecting the constitutional freedoms of every American and the integral human rights of all people, The Rutherford Institute has emerged as a prominent leader in the national dialogue on civil liberties and human rights and a formidable champion of the Constitution. Whitehead serves as the Institute’s president and spokesperson.

Widely recognized as one of the nation’s most vocal and involved civil liberties attorneys, Whitehead’s approach to civil liberties issues has earned him numerous accolades and accomplishments, including the Hungarian Medal of Freedom and the 2010 Milner S. Ball Lifetime Achievement Award for “[his] decades of difficult and important work, as well as [his] impeccable integrity in defending civil liberties for all.”

As nationally syndicated columnist Nat Hentoff observed about Whitehead: “John Whitehead is not only one of the nation’s most consistent and persistent civil libertarians. He is also a remarkably perceptive illustrator of our popular culture, its insights and dangers. I often believe that John Whitehead is channeling the principles of James Madison, who would be very proud of him.”

Born in 1946 in Tennessee, John W. Whitehead earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Arkansas in 1969 and a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Arkansas School of Law in 1974. He served as an officer in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971. He lives in Charlottesville, Virginia.

An allegory of the society we live in today, and how close it is to the world predicted in the works of Orwell, Philip K. Dick and others. The general population is pacified with bread, circuses and technology, but a determined few see behind that, and are willing to fight for freedom. An inspiration to those of us who are so inclined. An entertaining read with a message.

Not really my cup of tea. Way to Sci-Fi and violent for me.

But, for those that are into that type of thing, they will enjoy this book as it is very well written.

Also - very well proofed - I found no proofing errors - which is something rare in today's automated proofreading world.

An allegorical story that began as 1984 one hundred years hence. Became "The Matrix" and later a strange "Star Trek" episode. Hints of "Hunger Games" and "Spartacus" at the end. It's an easy read as it's written at the eighth grade level with plenty of cliches. The first half is much better than the second. An unsatisfying ending closes the story.

Implausibility dominates this badly-written book. Even the editing is insufficient. Scene segments are disjointed, and the plot line wanders.

Non-human characters serve no purpose, save to distract the reader.

Finally, many will be offended by this blatant attempt to lever off Orwell’s masterpiece. Whiteheads should be embarrassed.

Thank god, the volume was free.

Could not put it down. While it is fiction, its applicability to current events is so close It is not that hard to imagine similar scenarios in the next decade as we watch the disintegration of our nation. The grossly misinformed, at the moment, have the keys to the institution and they will not relinquish them willingly.

I've long been a fan of Whiteheads non-fiction, and really enjoyed his debut into fiction. I look forward to his next installment.

If it had come out a few years ago, I would have thought the plot was too far fetched. After seeing everything going on in the past couple years - hello trans humanism - it was very real to me. Only thing I didn't like was the ending made me think there is going to be a sequel.
