I originally bought this book in the 60s, and was suitably impressed at the time. Now some 40 odd years on, having given my original copy away, I bought another copy second hand. Even though I have a later book by the same author of an equally high standard in culinary excellence, there were certain basic recipes missing which I simply couldn't find elsewhere: hence my recent purchase of the second hand copy.
Although I have over the years acquired extensive experience in various types of cuisine, when it comes to Italian food, I doubt whether you will find a simpler, more reliable and more successful collection of recipes than in this book. For instance, I have never eaten a better ossobuco than the one here, and the same goes for her minestrone.
I know it all sounds very much old hat in this world of nouvelle cuisine, but don't be fooled by its apparent simplicity. It is in fact that very simplicity that makes this book look, deceptively, so out of date.
Don't be fooled, here is a treasure chest of refined yet simple Italian cooking "as mama used to make". A really great classic that should never have gone out of print.

The best Italian cookbook ever. I lived in Italy for 10 years and Marcella's recipes are the closest you will ever get to the REAL taste of Italy.

Brilliant book and now my favourite go to for all things Italian.

Bought for someone else (after reading a fictional book which centred around this book). It was positively received by someone with a cupboard full of cookery books as useful and practical. A plus point is that it is not over endowed with photographs; it's all about the cooking.

Love this cookbook. So many recipes to try. Clear directions - She writes in a common sense, straightforward manor with insight into Italian culture along the way. Authentic Italian Recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book was ordered to replace a FAVORITE of mine

The book was ordered to replace a FAVORITE of mine. All my library was burned up in a forest fire. I complained about the condition of the book as I felt that the book wasn't in the good condition as it was described. The pages were dirty and there was a greasy blob of something on the bottom.
The book and content of Marcella Hazan' recipes is one of the best Italian cook books ever.

Was a bit worried buying a book that was over 40 years old. When it arrived, however, I was pleasantly surprised at the great condition it was in, just the cover sheet a bit torn. The pages were in 'as new' condition. I had been looking for this book for a while and other examples were far more expensive. The price, the delivery and the seller's service are hard to beat. Very satisfied.

This book is basic.
Recipe is classic but it is quite useful for whom don't know about Italian foods.
Strongly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gift for Son-in-Law~A Huge Hit!
Reviewed in the United States on 7 February 2023
On Michael Symon’s Cooking Out show a question was sent in asking him what Italian cookbook was the best one to own. He said there was only one that far exceeded all others, and that this was the cookbook!
I decided to order it for our son-in-law for Christmas. He spent his childhood learning to cook from his Italian grandmother. He loves cooking and is superb at it.
I was so excited when he called to say he had been looking at this cookbook for a few weeks and was wanting to order it, so he was super excited that I had gotten it for him! I had no idea that he even had been checking this cookbook out. So it was a huge win!
